I noticed a loud popping noise while driving my "97 Dodge Ram coming from the rear suspension. I looked under and found one of the rear shackles rusted and snapped. I am trying to find new ones in a hurry but cannot. The local auto parts dont have them. The internet seems to only have lowering ones. Here are two options I found but I dont know what to measure for spring width. The old shackle measures just over 3in. opening and the spring measures 2.5in without the bushing included.

SHACKLE, All Models, 2.5 Spring Width

SHACKLE, All Models, 3.0 Spring Width

Go to your local Dodge dealer. He will probably have them in stock. Common problem on Dodges of that vintage, especially in the Northern states. (Salt)

Does the weak shackle apply to 3500 Rams mfgd in '98?. Are they the same left and right? I'm thinking I might want to stock or replace one or two. I'm in MA as well.

Morning Wardner,

I can't answer that for sure, but I would suspect the 3500 shackles are made from the same material as the 1500, 2500 shackles. We have had trouble with both series. I would suggest taking a chipping hammer if you have one, and lightly tapping in the center of the shackle. You will know right away if there is a problem. The center is made solid and the hammer will go right through it if there is a problem.
