Hi-
I am looking into two different deere tractors right now. The deere 1020 is about $1,300 less then the industrial tractor. The industrial tractor may be a little to big for what I am looking to do. The 1020"s hydralics work great until your drive the tractor in high speeds for a hundered yards or more and then the hydralics are very slow but eventualy return to working order. The pto is often a challenge to engage on the 1020.

The 400 does not have any obvious issues but I am also no expert. It does leak oil some.

What are everyone"s thoughts on these tractors... which was a better model... what should I expect to pay for one in colorado (both with loaders). What else should I check out before buying.

Thanks

1020 is close to the same as a 300 Industrial - except the 1020 hydraulics are not as good. 1020 uses a tiny little German hydraulic pump, and the 300 uses a US built 2.4 cubic inch pump and is much better.

400 is the industrial version of the ag. 2020 and both have very good hydraulics.

In regard to the PTO - depends on what kind of PTO. 1020 was available with three versions, ground driven, engine-clutch (dual) driven, or independent hydrualic.

I am by no means an expert on Deere's, but I thought the 400 was an Industrial 2010 and early 401s were Industrial 2020s.

From what I've read, 2010s are either so-so or bad.

2010 has absolutely nothing in common with the 400. An Industrial 2010 is still called a 2010. An industrial version of the 3020 is a 500.
An industrial version of the 1020 is a 300.
An industrial version of the 2020 is a 400.

I have had a 1020 for 26 years. Have a Freeman loader on it. The 1020 is the same as a 301 Industrial and 400 401 is a 2020 I think. I don't know what to tell you about them. I had the hyd pump remuilt on mine 4 years ago, cost me around 425 I believe at a JD dealer. If the PTO won't engage,it needs adjusting. You have to hold the clutch all the way down to engage those. Spider gears went out in the differential of mine not long after I got it. Fixed it myself with used parts from a boneyard. Did a major on the engine 10 years or so back. Parts from Deere, ran me $500 including valve job at engine shop.Had to rebuild the steering unit once, broke the steering arm underneath once.Put in a new clutch myself, not a super simple job. Guess all in all,for 26 years of loader work,it could be worse.

The 400 should have a heavier built loader if it is a Deere one and I'd say clear of the other one with the hyd. problems it has.
