Tractor is a 6 volt, jd 40W.
last summer I bought a new battery box, cleaned the tractor and painted around the battery area, primed and painted the new battery box - put 'er together.

Now (8 months later) - the bottom of the box has 1/2 the paint loosened, and there is a teaspoon of white corrosion there, the cables are clean, with vaseline coating. I am REALLY CAREFUL when checkng the water, or adding water, to not spill any over the battery.

What's wrong? How to keep the box from corroding?

Alternator or generator? What part number on the generator's regulator? Is the regulator wired correctly?

Tractor sat from October till March- ground strap disconnected.
generator - have not looked at regulator or connections.
Adding water was just a maintenance check - it does not "eat" water.
I put the charger on it a couple times just to keep it up. Maybe I overcharged it, but I had the charger on AUTO setting.
The ammeter indicated no charge, but the generator will motor slowly on the bench.

First off verify your situation as per those who have posted before me. To salvage your bat box take it back down to shiney metal (not a speck of rust remaining), prime and coat with battery box paint-at least 3 heavy coats. All wet cell batterys emit hydrogen sulfide gas and sulfuric acd vapors during the charge cycle. They are both heavier than air and extremly corrosive. Might want to check out an Optima battery. The coating can be found at most auto parts emporiums.

Are you adding water continually? If so you either have a leak(crack) in the battery or, as others have said, your system is overcharging, or, lastly, you're overfilling. If a battry is overfilled as the electrolyte expands it will be forced out, somewhere. That the cables are clean will (maybe) tell you the post seals are not leaking. When checking/filling it is only necessary to cover the plates. Don't fill the neck.

If the tractor is in regular, daily use, I would say that the charging system is over-charging. The same symptoms could occur if you keep a battery charger connected to it, or it could just be that the new battery is slightly defective.

Check that the charging system is not producing more than 7.25 volts if 6 volt, or 14.5 volts if 12 volt and replace that flooded cell battery with a sealed spiral cell AGM battery like the Optima or Exide Oribital spiral cell AGM sealed battery (25% cheaper). You will no longer have to deal with any corrosion from acid leakage or fumes and the battery will last atleast twice as long as a flooded cell battery. It will also have much less self discharge if the machine is not used for a long period of time. My first Optima is still going strong after 16 years of continuous hard use.
