Consignment sale today. About an hour into the sale, first row. A nice original Massey Harris 22. Rusty, but stored inside, really good condition. Started and ran very well. Nice older tires. Sold for $1100.

4 hours later, last row. Farmall 404 Narrow-front. Very rusty, very rough sheet metal. Right rear tire blown out, left one barely holding air. Rims were good. Engine stuck. Manifold shot. Missing Seat. Live hyd., but non-live PTO. Basically a parts tractor for someone less ambitious than me. I walked away at $1100. Am I missing something here? Is there something I don't know about? I was blown away that it brought that much, in comparison to the Massey. Stuff was going cheap all day, but the one thing I thought I could afford, went sky-high in my opinion. Any theories?

saw a 766 IH today bring 14,500- has only about 3000 hours on the tractor, but still, that seems like an absolute extreme.

Shocking things happen at auction sometimes. About 9 years ago I went to an auction where a TO 30 in original and working condition went for $7000 with a bush hog. I was anazed!!! I went to the auction with my wife, cleared to spend $2300 and I just packed up the tent. A Farmall cub that was all original and not beat up went for $3300. Thing is the older gentelman that owned all this stuff was about 90 and it was all being sold so he could move to assisted living. He sat there in a straw hat while his life history was auctioned away. I"ll never forget it. Glad he got the money.

One explaination is that the 404 is a rarer tractor. In that shape could very well have been bought by a salvage yard for parts that might be otherwise hard to find. It used to amaze me that burned tractors in "skid row" at Yoder and Frey in Archbold would bring as much as running tractors that went through the ring.

Good point, I thought about that a little too. A guy could get $1100 out of that 404 in parts, but the Massey was a good complete tractor, not worth as much still in one piece.

Just curious, what all was there at that auction?

I saw your previous post about it too late to get out there.

Any small dump trucks there?

Only dump truck was a big Ford tandem. Probably a little bigger than you're looking for ; ) I'm pretty sure that was the only truck come to think of it. It was a combine special, too. Plenty of those, didn't watch em sell though. I DID watch a nice Farmall C that ran with a new rear tire sell for $650. Like I said, stuff was going cheap.

What's a "Combine Special?"

I just meant they had a bunch of combines. If you were looking to buy one, that would've been the place to be.

I attended an auction that had a Farmall 400D, Wide front. quick-hitch. They did not get it to start. It was missing a few parts, but was almost complete. (tires shot, sheetmetal poor)I was still married then and I knew better than to buy it. It sold for $800 which was a fair price. Later it occurred to me that I could have swapped a few parts between my tractors and still sold the leftovers for that same $800. It may have been two people in a simular situation.

I watched a 504U sell for 4500.00 that had 4 bad tires and a hole in the block you could put your fist in and not touch the sides. I talked to the runner up and told him I had a nice one I would sell for 3800.00 and he wouldn`t even look at it!

I hear ya! Watched a Super C sell for 1700 dollars at an auction. I talked to the runner up and told him about mine which was in as good or better condition for 1200 and never heard from him either. Could be as JK-NY said, but I saw the same guy bid on and buy a 404 utility for 3000 and it was probably worth 1200 at most, or maybe he ran the bid up and got stuck with it.

Could be the runner up was there to run up the bid on that one, could have been its owner.
