I think Rusty said it best. Its all about having a litle discretion.

If you want your exhaust a little loud, do it right and get some Flowmasters or something similar. Do it right, and make it sound good. Don't just put some straight pipes on it. There's a difference between a pickup with a nice American sounding rumble, and a loud unmuffled racket.

And agin, with discretion. If its the middle of the day and your out in the middle of nowhere, let 'er rip. If I'm out in my front yard and hear you flying by with a nice loud rumble, I'll probably give you a thumbs up. But if its late at night, or your in the middle of town, take it easy. A little bit of politeness goes along way.

Funny how we wouldnt complain if it was a antique tractor with a straight pipe going up and down the road all hours of the day. You dont have to be loud to be good, I personally like the way a set of Flowmasters sound, not too loud, and gives a ride that sweet hot rod sound.

How about neither. When I'm sitting out on the front porch in the evening with a beer and some Allison Krouse playing, the last thing I want to hear is yours or anybody elses truck or car booming down the road. Sorry about MY rant.

A dual exhaust system complete with a nice pair of Cherry-Bombs is very nice to listen to, but make sure you run the pipes all the way to the rear bumper so that YOU don't get deafened by the sound, and when you are in town, or any highly populated area, please have some respect for other folks and keep your heavy foot off of the loud pedal. When you are out in the open country, then you can let-er-talk.

Loud stereos are for low-riders and rice-burners. They do not belong in a truck. Also, loud pipes should be illegal on those rice-burners.

You ask if I'd rather hear a loud engine or loud stereo. My answer is: Neither!

I don't recall the source, but loud engines and loud stereos always remind me of this quote:

"A man's tolerance to noise is inversly proportional to his intelligence."

That"s age, not intelligence! J/K

Nah, it"s the sound of the noise. My old man"s 393 cube Windsor w/dual Raptors sounds awesome. Yet when I ran my Nissan with the intermediate pipe removed, it was just as loud, but sounded terrible. Kinda like all those cars w/fart mufflers, or the Harley"s with drag pipes. Just terrible.

Loud exhausts are good. Rap music doesn't belong in a truck

My 2 cents is that the noise is just that: noise. Loud cars, trucks, bikes, music, etc. only serves to irritate people who don't want to hear any of it. I like mufflers that work and music that is contained within the confines of the vehicle.

Loud pipes are cop magnets.Hearing loss will be pretty common with the motorcycle crowd.I was on my front lawn when a loud bike went by and caused pain in my ears. The pipes ended just under the feet of the woman on the back of the bike.I was about 10 feet away, wonder how she stood it.I have two friends wear hearing aids in both ears. They have a hard time in hot weather when the aids just dont work well.Better talk with some one who wears hearing aids.

Have your hearing tested to see just how much loss you already have. Take it from someone who has been around load noise most of his working days and then shooting guns and other loud stuff and now can't here the birds chirping in the garden.

Rap music for sure..... in reply to D17 man, 03-30-2007 19:59:56
I'll take the rap thanks. I'm listening the insane clown posse right now. I'm 44 years old. I have no problem with the loud pipes either really.

When you live on a main truck route/highway like I do for any length of time, you become accustomed to the noises. All hours of the night, and especially friday night in good weather, the music, pipes, and truck jakes go on all night long. It's life. If I dont like it, I can move.

I was one of those kids not that long ago... Loud pipes save lives! LOL I know better now, but it was fun in high school and I didn't hurt anyone either.

Kids will be kids, do you very best to keep it safe!

Rap music? No. Why not some Flatt and Scruggs or Bill Monroe or Hank Williams or Ernest Tubb or Roy Acuff? Now that I could stand listening to. 'Course I'd probably have it blaring out my own speakers first : ) More folks our age oughtta listen to music like that. But, to answer your question, I'd rather hear loud exhaust than irritating music.

Why is it you must be rude by "sharing" your music and your engine noise with those who have no choice but to listen to it?

Have you not been taught proper manners?

This behavior is self centered, and most consider it rude.

Very rarely do I turn my music up load enough so other vehicles can hear it, and even more rarely do I play loud music in town, where other cars are nearby at stoplights and such. Going down the highway, I'll pay it as loud as I want, and won't ever think of myself being rude.

They "share" their loud pipes and loud music as a way of saying they are still in junior high. Kind of like a calling card.

You said you played it loud on the highway where only you could hear it.

My post would not apply to you in that circumstance. I do the same thing.

But some kid who must have loud pipes on the pickup just to hear some noise has a junior high mentality.

I was sitting in a parking lot eating a hamburger when a kid pulled in with straight pipes that came out under the doors.Had a fine looking girl with him. After he shut down the racket I told the girl to be careful getting out of the car with those hot exhaust pipes so close. The kid snapped at me What do you know.I told him that I knew a girl that got a bad burn getting out of a friends car on those pipes.Burn scars can be ugly.Next thing I noticed he had 2 6x9 speakers with big magnets sitting loose on the rear window shelf.I asked him if he knew what those speakers would do in an accident or a panic stop. The kid says Ive got good brakes.I told him the speakers didnt have brakes and they would come forward and strike both of them in the head. The girl looked at me and said ,Is that right?I said you can bet on it.I wanted to tell her to get rid of her stupid boy friend but kept quiet...Teenagers can be pretty stupid.....
