I pull a 7000 lb Appalachian trailer with my GMC. I have been doing it for years. I took it to the shop for new rear brakes and when I picked it the guy cautioned me about my hitch.
It is a class 4 hitch that mounts to the frame with 3 -1/2 inch bolts on each frame rail. The receiver is an extension from that. Well the hitch was bent to the right slightly. Needing to haul an Oliver 55 I figured we could haul it that evening and get a new hitch the next day. We loaded the tractor and headed home. About 5 miles from home on a major 4 lane, I began hearing this grinding noise. After a bit I pulled off the road and as soon as I hit the berm all hell broke loose. The hitch bent and the trailer tongue and all was down on the road. The moral of this story is , Check Your hitch once in awhile, they make a lot of scrap these days.

Saw a heart stopper a while back. Was working in the pasture behind the house, and looked up to see a septic tanker truck pulling a trailer with a tractor/backhoe on it. As I watched the trailer and truck parted company, and the truck continued on. Trailer slid on down the road, bounced off the embankment at the side of the road, back thru the ditch, and ended up in the ditch further down. Must have slid 300 yards. How that rig didn"t upset, I"ll never know. Tractor was OK, they backed it off the trailer and drove it home. Trailer lost a wheel, damaged axle, and the front caster wheel. Seemed they forgot to latch the pintle hitch - pulled it over 30 miles that way before they hit a splice in the pavement (quite a bounce.) and truck and trailer parted company. No safety chains, no brakes on trailer. Thot that was a little careless! Must have been going 50mph or more. They were awful lucky!

i have seen this happen on two occasions, boat trailer came loose and bit the dirt, but the worse one was when i bought my new chevy, have them add a towing package, and they did, well two days later, i was hualing round bales on a flatbed, moving fairly quick down the roadi lost the trailer, with my hitch still attached to it, come to find out the mechanic that added my hitch only had four bolts on one that took eight, so he just finished my truck, needless to say after that, the dealership needed a new mechanic, so as the old saying goes "If you want somthing done right, do it yourself", just my too cents

And on the subject of "If you want it done right, do it yourself", the Missus and her friend went to Montana (from SW Washington) to pick up a couple horses. When they went to hook up the trailer (bumper pull) to come home, wife backed up the truck, friend hitched up the trailer. Kinda. Morning after wife got home, I went to unhitch, and couldn't get the tongue latch to open. Found that the latch was closed, and the tongue was just resting on top of the ball. Can't believe they drove several hundred miles, over 3 mountain passes, and the trailer never went south.

after my two instances, i live by that, my little sis is a good hand around the farm and does stuff right, but back in school i was hauling her heifers to town to get ready for a show and she said she shut the trailer gate, i pulled out on the road and it swung wide open, the heifers were tied though, so i always double check, even if i do it myself, i am just extra careful i guess

Been there and done that. Boat trailer hitch bolted to bumper. Two the three bolt came out. Found while fueling. This was an OM on my part. Only my feeling were hurt and someone has my rear plate on a fence post in Iowa.

I know the feeling. Seventeen years ago I picked up a VC Case at Edgely ND and started back to Great Falls MT; 19 miles West of Dickinson ND 2 hitch bolts came out and the trailer started whipping on me. Before I got stopped, the trailer had flipped and I probably drug the tractor 1/4 mile. All the chains holding the load on the trailer held and we set it up with a wrecker. I don't know why the picup didn't go too. The patrolman who investigated the mishap was pleasantly surprised to find that I had had the safety chain fastened so he didn't have to write a ticket. I still haven't fixed the tractor.

Hi Tom. I remember seeing a picture in Old Abe's News years ago about a trailer flipped over with a little case tractor on it, just like you described. That wasn't you was it? Thanks. Charley.
