What is the best size tractor for a 12 Acre Property? I have looked at a 70"s ish Massey Ferguson 165. Are those good tractors? Are there any manufacturers to stay away from? The MF 165 appears to be well maintaned but it"s hard to tell whats under the fresh coats of paint. I will mainly be cutting grass or digging post holes.

Stick with a brand name JD, NH,& MF if buying new make sure you have dealer near . The MF-135 is a good choice a fine tractor . for 12 acres I think you would be better of with a small 25 to 33 HP diesel my 27 uses about 4.5 gal in 8 hours mowing with a 5' Kingkutter brush hog you dont need all that power if you aren't going to cut and bail hay . Ill get down off my soap box and let some oneelse talk .

We used to have a MF 285 and at least at our local dealer part's for it were very expensive compared to our IH tractors. I always thought they should have made their front door 4' tall so their customer's would already be bent over when they walked in.

I think that you have made a wise choice. Good general purpose unit. Most of the weak points on that tractor are do it yourself adjustments. (Power steering and clutch.) That 3rd party inspection is a great idea. A second set of eyes is always good.

I would try to get a tractor with nearby dealer support.
I would not get a Chinese tractor because of problems getting parts and quality issues
I would not get one of the small "gray market" tractors that are reconditioned used tractors made in Japan. They are good tractors but there are parts issues with them. The MF 165 is an excellent tractor. It has about 50 hp which is adequate for anything you are likely to be doing. It has leve power and 3ph lift. Check and see if the swinging drawbar is with the tractor. It will have good resale value if you decide to sell it. It would be nice if you could get a knowledge 3rd party to check the condition of the tractor. Good luck.

Yep,

That would make you a good little tractor for what you want to do.

A MF135 would make a nice "little" tractor. A MF165 would just be icing on that 12 acre cake. Expect to pay around $7500 for it.

Good Luck,

Aaron

Kinda of funny when I think back. My dad bought a new 165 diesel in 1972, had the front suitcase weights and stabilizer bars plus a new 9 ft. King disk for $5400. It was an excellent tractor.
