theres this '88 or around that year ford f150 for sale down the road from me. its got a 3 inch body lift, i think a 2 inch suspension lift, 300ci straight six and 4 speed manual tranny. i know the straight 6 is a very good reliable and long lasting motor, but i am young and need somthing that'll go offroading and have power. is there anywway to make it sound more like a v8 by straight piping or anything. i'd use the truck for farmwork, light towing, and ocassional offroading/ mudding

In the states, I have an 89 F-150 4X4 with the 300 and T-5 4-speed that I bought new. While it has enough power to pull itīs self around, that 300 is no comparison to the 300 in a 65 F-100 I had. The 89 will be getting a 351C installed when I get enough time to do it. Heck, with the 300 it only gets 15-16 mpg, might as well have a V-8.

The 300 Six is a great motor, we had a '66 and I still have my '96 150 xlt 4x4 with 130,000 some odd miles, am in the midst of replacing the 5 spd mazda M5R2 transmission, with a rebuilt one, that was an isolated problem that never was made right. That particular trans was not the greatest design for heavy towing and abuse, but fine for regular use.

I've towed a little with it, and it did fine, overload any truck and it won't pull well on the hills, I've know many others with the 300 Six and it was a great motor to have in a 1/2 ton, mine was the last year they offered it, it's a keeper.

I used to have an 83 4x4 4 speed 300 six. I used to pull loaded gravity boxes out of the fields with that thing. I put her in low range and away it went. These were 250 bushel boxes.

For farm work isn't a truck thats an extra 5" high going to be annoying? A friend of mine has a Dodge 1500 thats high like a 3/4 ton truck and whenever we go anywhere to get a snowmobile or something we either take the trailer or my Dakota.
I like the ride height of my Dakota for actually putting stuff in. For a work truck I'd always get something lower. For an offroader buy a Jeep...

Whats the deal with loud pipes too? It seems everybody wants somebody to know they're coming from miles away. I don't understand, are they ugly and want to give people warning?

You're right. Why you want a truck that you have to use a ladder to get in and out of I have no idea and wanting it louder???? ..... Save your hearing and give the rest of us some peace and quiet. I guess some of these guys with their jacked up trucks and loud exhaust systems are trying to make up for other deficiencies and insecurities.

If you just want a truck that can lug and pull then this straight six is the engine. You need do nothing for power, this motor will stay there and lug any load all day. If you looking for speed get a V8. The six will last longer but it might take you two more minutes to get there. Don't mess up a good thing. I agree it is the best engine Ford ever made, although I can't complain about my V6 either, 162,000 miles and still going strong. FORDS ARE FOREVER.

I can't tell you what to do but I can tell you that the 300 six is an engine that Ford should NEVER have stopped making.

third party image

I bought this 92' F-150 4X4, 300-6, 5 spd, air, cruise, power winders and 110,500 on the clock in real nice shape in January. $1,500.00. I did the usual BS to it like a tune up, changed all the lubes and one parking brake cable, and fiddled with the clutch linkages to get them working correctly. Otherwise it didn't NEED much. $2,800 sounds a little high for an 88' 2 grand is more in range. 1 grand more the norm. I would avoid a truck with a lift kit, garages make a lot of $$$ every year fixing drive line troubles in these types of trucks.

I split the manifold and ran dual pipes(no mufflers) out the back. That will get everyones attention! It sounded like a cessna airplane.

lift kits are generally put in by kids who like to beat on their trucks. Look it over REAL close. I'd guess drivetrain has been abused/neglected/busted up. Sometimes you get lucky, but most times you don't. That may be just where I live though. Mike

i'll sell you a stock straight six 4x4 with a 5 speed but the front hub needs to be replaced and the interior needs a new carpet, 160000 miles for $1000
