I am planting black oil sunflower's for doves for the first time. we are in eastern Tennesee. I am using a two row JD planter. I need help with planting advice including seed plate selection and weed maintenance. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Small flat plates will work. Adjust your spacing with the chain/drive gears, want them 6 to 8 inches apart, doubles won't hurt either. Don't plant over 1 to 1/2 inches deep. Apply pre-emergence PROWL at 4 pints per acre, can also add 8 ounces of Authority...and cultivate if you want...works great for dove hunting!! Cmore

Thanks for the help. Sounds like you are very experienced at raising sunflowers for doves. I have received "recommendations" from the educated and the experienced educated. Other than generally stating "black oil sunflower seed", can you recommend a name/brand of sunflowers to plant? Also, I have been told that the product "Beyond" can be applied post-emerge. Do you have any experience with it?

Have you considered using a grain drill? think that's how they do it there. Just block off unneeded ports.

I will get the plate number tonight. I'm not too sure how it is going to translate to a JD planter tho...

I planted the Black Oil Sunflowers - Kinda like a last minute thought. Wife loved to use them in decorating around the house too.

Seems like the seeds were relly cheap too....Like $10 for 50 lbs, or something like that...

Good Luck!

I used the medium-sized corn seed plate in my Cole MX12 planter. Planted a little thick, but had a great crop. Had a great dove shoot too!

BTW, I"m down in North Ga. - Dalton area.

Good Luck!

Thanks for your help. I am in Chattanooga. Can you define "medium-sized" corn plates? Do you have a plate number? What seed variety did you plant?

Lincoln Ag phone 402 464 6367, you send them a sample of the seed, they make the right plates. Good luck.
