Found this video today and was wondering if the guy was cranking it properly. I thought your supposed to lift, not push down just in case it kicked backed.

The old girl must have had pretty good spark to fire up all that extra gas. My grampa used to help the local doctor set broken arms of farmers who cranked the tractor the wrong way. He'd sit down on the table with the patient, put his foot on the patient's arm pit, grab the hand and pull real hard while the doctor manipulated the bone back in place, and the patient was awake the whole time! I think about this story every time I grab a crank.

Yup, he'll end up breaking a thumb (and possibly his face or entire hand) sooner or later doing it that way. Never cranked one myself and hope I never have to, but common sense and many busted knuckles tell me to always pull(wrench, pry bar, starting crank, etc etc....)

Re: Hand cranking video The way I was taught in reply to PH, 03-25-2007 17:24:57
and why. Face across front of tractor. Place right hand on hood, like you were going to push. Grasp crank in left hand, about nine o'clock or higher and pull over. The why is, if the tractor kicks back, it will pull crank out of your hand and you will be pushing yourself away from spinning crank. If you are standing in front of tractor and pulling up and it kicks back it will tend to pull you into spinning crank. I did not watch video long enough to see if he got it started.

i watched that video, the owners manuals tell you to lift the crank. you are correct. that guy is an accident waiting to happen. leans over the loader frame and cranks, if the crank catches, it will pull him in and he will get a facefull of starting crank. nice of him to let the tractor warm up so long after sitting all winter. sheesh
