I have been looking to buy a good tandem disk for a while and I now have the chance to buy my neighbors IH 480 (18") disk for $500. It is in real good shape so I am very interesed. Wondering if my John Deere 2840 will handle it. I have heard say that you need 7 horsepower per foot and if that is true, I will be about 40 horses short. What do you guys think?

P.S. - I live in south-central Iowa. Thanks, Matt

Matt Weltz;

I could pull a 15"MF tandem with bar harrow in low 4(about 5mph) with my 706 ger.diesel. I would spin out before the engine died out.

I had a 20 1/2 ft IH 480 disk and pulled it with a John deere 4430 and it made it work. I think you need a bigger tractor. I"m in SW Mn.

We've got a 21' MF 820 disk we have pulled with our IH 826 which would be about 90hp and it will pull it at around 5 mph unless you really want to run it deep. I think Hugh's idea of leaving the wings folded up would work just fine and for $500 I don't think you could go wrong with that disk.

You"d better have 100hp. to utilize an 18 footer.

Matt: You didn't say whether this IH disk has wings. I had a Bush Hog that was close to 22' The center section with wings up was roughly 12'. I used the full 22' behind my 100 hp Deere or 125 hp IH. I also quite often disked using 656 Farmall on the center section with wings up.

At $500. you could remove those wings and save them, either to add should you ever buy a larger tractor, or replacement parts.

12' is a lot for a 656. It will pull it but not very deep

ed: Don't be so ridiculous, a 656 diesel will play with a 44 blade disk, 18" blades axle deep. Believe me, I put a total of 26,000 hours on a 656 and 560, both 282 diesels. You must have used a gasser runing on 4 cylinders.
