I've working on a deal for a couple of old tractors - and part of it comes to this: Me taking a late 50s FWD truck as part of the deal if I want to buy the other two tractors. I'm figuring - if I can get at least $500 back out of truck, I'm making out well - and would be getting one of the old tractors - virtually - for free. I'm not a big-truck collector and don't really have any interest in keeping, or fixing the truck. It's a late 50s vintage FWD, got a 29,000 lb. GVW rating. It has very low miles and no rust - it was a fire-department water-tanker for remote off-road fires. The tank was removed - so there is nothing mounted on the rear now. It has a six-cylinder International Harvester engine, five-speed trans, a huge transfer-case, etc. Has a lever on the dash that operates some sort of differential locks. Also appears to have AC 120 volt power - made from a large Leece-Neville generator. Wheels are 20" split-rims - duals on back. I know the engine ran fine when first parked a few years ago. Anybody got any experience as to what this type of truck is worth? Are there FWD collectors?

As to the engine question, various late 50s FWD"s show a number of IH engines: BD 240,264, 282 and 308; RD 372, 406, 450 and 501; and unidentified (as to BD/RD etc) 405, 406, 450, and 501"s...and those are just from a couple incomplete sources.

From what I know, these FWD's use R-series International cabs, and the engines are the Red Diamond (RD) series, likely a 450 or 501...

Now, I'm not in a position to buy right now, but I'm thinking that there are some tractor pullers who might want the engine, and the 4x4 setup might interest some other pullers, especially someone building a "monster truck"...but that's just my opinion.

Personally, I'm thinking it'd make one big, badazz pickup truck...but that's just the warped side of me coming out.

You might also consider talking to the ad people at spaamfaa.org, a fire-eqpmt collector site that accepts free individuals ads for fire-trucks and related stuff. FWD built some fire eqpmt, and the big generator sounds like it was used, or necessary, to run some part of the firefighting eqpmt. If they accept an ad it"ll be seen by a lot of fire truck collectors. Good luck.

You might want to post this information on the classis truck site at the bottom of the list on the left side of this page. Also ask about the A.T.H. S. that is a group of truck historians and collecters.
