I recently bought this 1947 JD D and the water feed valve has long since been d/c ed on it. Is this water feed valve needed and should it be restored?

The valve isn't needed unless you plan to work the tractor on kerosene or distillate. I don't have one on my D and have used it in the field on gas for 17 years. The purpose of the valve was to inject a little water into the engine to cut down pre-ignition or "ping" when using kerosene. It's not need at all when using gasoline. For a truly correct restoration it should be there, but a lot of guys plug it internally so there's no chance of anti-freeze getting into the engine and it still looks right. They are kind of hard to find and most D's don't have them anymore. Hope this helps.
