Gathering scattered firewood in heavy cover

A MNR work crew has just finished two weeks in our woodlot thinning a 15 acre stand of maple and walnut. Much of what they cut was ironwood, hickory and stunted hard maple. The problem I inherit is finding a way to collect a vast quantity of the small-diameter, 4' chunks of wood which they left where they fell.

Yesterday we moved some of the larger logs with a 3pt hitch skidding attachment on a 100 hp tractor. That worked very well. I'm wondering if there would be any way to adapt a cable skidder to pick up a large number of smaller pieces of wood and bring them to the road from 150' away?

The stand is still quite dense with young growth. I used to haul out small quantities of wood in the box of my golf cart, but I don't think I want to put the current machine through that kind of abuse.

I'll probably pick away at the wood with a long, very narrow, tri-axle trailer behind my Massey 30. It will back into some pretty tight spots without damage.

Any better ideas?

I have a Oliver 1650 with a 1610 loader on it.
I made up a bale spear with three spears that attaches right to the loader. Then I got the idea and made a 3 sided steel basket where the floor is raised about eight inches off the ground. The basket is open in the front and on the top. I can then pick up this basket using the bale spears and take it to the woods. I also pull a small trailer. The small stuff all goes into the basket and trailer and then I can come back and pick up a major portion of the trunk with the bale spears.

I open up roads for my small tractor with a 3point pto cordwood saw.I saw everything close to the tractor and go back with a 4x8 trailer and pick up the sawed wood. Its slow but sure and each load brought out is worth 100.00 when dry if I want to sell it.I leave good trees to grow unless I need them for my sawmill.I run a main road with branch roads and pile all brush.

Now might be the time to look into a utilitarian four wheeler. The older 4x4 Suzuki 230's with 4 wheel independant suspension, dual range, locking diff etc were unstoppable, quiet and low maintainence. That and a small trailer makes an ideal wood picking machine. You'll find plenty of other uses for the quad too. No, you don't have to ride it on other peoples property nor be a nuisance with it as some people assume. You can use it like a tractor and find it very rewarding.

Just an idea... When I have small diameter wood to move I will clip on 4 or 5 more chokers onto my bull line. Then I have a total of 12 or 13 to work with. Plus there is less climbing up and down on the machine, running with this number of chokers. Jim WJ

Probably go with a smaller tractor and trailer. Been cutting firewood for years with a JD B and single axle 4'x8' trailer. Almost no damage to woods and really easy to get around.
Have fun,
Paul

You say 100 HP tractor so I guess cat 2 hitch.
I would suggest a three point hay bale carrier of the type that has two heavy spears about 3 to 4 feet long to go under the bale. It looks something like a fork lift.
Tilt the carrier forward and pile the lengths of wood on the forks. You can back the tractor near the piles throw the wood an and drive to the next pile. I have made two brackets that fit on the outer ends of the forks that allow me to stand a log upright to hold even more on my unit.

If small piles were made by hand of the slash you want to recover, in several locations toward the reach of a cable a block could be attached to a stout live tree to allow pulling on the cable at 90 degrees so the pull does not need to go out into a field, or other property. If the bundles were in the area of 350# each, a 3/8" cable would surely do well. Be very careful to tie them so that very little sticks forward from the point of choke on the limbs. Further, be very careful to limit your pull (I would put a used car tire at the tractor to buffer the cable, and allow me to see the amount of pull. A cable snapping is a deadly thing. I have seen a man after a tagline came into the cab of an Insley with him, no left hand, and a scarred up face. JimN
