I like to take apart my oil filters to see what the filters are picking up. I took apart the hydraulic oil filter on my JD 401 industrial, and ran a cow magnet along all the seams of the filter. I picked up some metal, enough to cover a penney and not be able to see the copper. All the trans gears, breaks, and the pump it self make a certin amount of metal, but how much is too much. Problen is I don't know how long the filter has been in place as I don't know much of the history of this tractor. Stan

Also remember your Deere has a piston pump and Deere recommends a 10 micron filter. The human eye can only see particles as small as 40 micron. Filters at the right rate of filtration are the key to good hydraulic system life and even more on any piston pump system.

I've seen more metal flakes in a newer tractor, so i think you're in good shape.
