First and formost I was wondering how much of a travel trailer a farmall H can pull on two miles of flat road from my place to the local park for a weekend trout derby. I was also wondering if their is a way to rig up a fifth wheel on a tractor so I can pull the neighbors travel trailer to. It sounds stupid but do you think it can be done?

find a couple of old 1 ton truck axles and build a tamden converter somewhat like semis use for pulling doubles this would put all trailer weight on it and then your H could pull it easy it would take some learning to back up but it can be done .

Nope its close to Stover MO and is in very sad shape. The exhaust is open to let rain get into the engine and the spark plugs are out of the engine

My uncle has an arrangement not unlike what Tim..Ok describes. It's a fifth wheel on a dolly that he uses to move a his bulldozer around the farm on a lowboy. He doesn't use an H, though, he has a large fairly recent Case-International. As to how much an H will pull with a regular trailer hitch, mine has a 2" ball on the drawbar and it's pulled my little dump trailer loaded to a total weight of close to 7K. The only time it gave trouble was in deep sand. When the drawbar and the trailer axle both bottomed out everything stopped.
Good luck, Wm

I agree with 'dds-inc'. "Highly unstable" as in flipping over backward when trying to pull from such a high point.

I'll comment on the 5th wheel..I've got what basically amounts to an axle with a solid tongue on the front, and a gooseneck ball mounted up above the axle..it works great for moving the trailers around the farm, sometimes places you wouldn't want to take your truck.. just have to get a little more creative to mount a 5th wheel on it, but sure it can be done.. just make sure your brakes are up to stopping it..

I have used a setup like that for moving 5th wheel trailers. The only trouble I had was because of the dolly carrying the weight you get no weight transfer to the tractor back wheels to aid in traction.

Very true Mike.. I was pulling a 20ft gooseneck with 11 round bale on it a few weeks ago with my little IH424..gotta go down in a bottom and up the other side..wasn't sure if it was gonna make it or not..it did,but right on the edge of losing traction..

That would be much better if you hooked the tractor up to a bumper hitch trailer. I imagine an H would pull a 2 axle trailer with another H sitting on top of it.

Too complicated for pulling a trailer 2 miles.

Besides, you will have dangerous issues such as the trailer pushing the tractor all over the road, the fornt end raising off the ground, and besides that, the load will have to be so high from the drawbar hitch that it will make the tractor highly unstable.

Go find a truck to borrow.
