What's the simplest and most effective way to remove a bunch of smaller mesquite trees from a vacant lot? I bought a couple of lots here in Coleman,Texas and need to clear them off...I will have a tractor available and can rent a backhoe if that is needed to dig 'em out...

I can't just saw them off at ground level, can I?

(I know I'm not from here, we don't have Mesquite in upstate NY. )

Truck, Clark is 100% right on! Mix Remedy & DSL at a 20% or better yet 25% rate. For a small area mix 1to4, or 1to5 in a 3 gal pump up hand sprayer, spray a 2 to 3 in band around the trunk, about 12 ins up from the ground on the tree, just about 30 days after leafs are good and outand "Actively growing", you should get a 95% kill in 3 months, retreat in the fall, after any saplings put on new leaves, Fall rain, and is actively growing again. Buy this time next year, just after the rest on the Mesquite in the area has leafed out, Then and only then cut off the surenough dead ones, later on on the ones that may still be dying. Under No Circumstanses Cut Any Saplings this year, Not till 2008. That is what you need to do. Good Luck, It will time to get started here pretty quickly.
Later,
John A.

A tough question because it transcends many eras. My neighbour had an Allis WD45 and pound for pound that tractor had balls up against anything you name. We had an M and it was a great tractor, but how can you compare these 50's tractors with 70's tractors or newer..too many things to compare, weight, rated horse power, gearing..there were many great tractors out there that suited certain needs and the majority of farmers were satisfied with their purchases for their particular purpose. I have 6 tractors each one has qualities that make it stand out but not surpass the qualities of others..a tough question to ponder indeed!

Mesquite roots are an excellent source of firewood, but I don"t know how many people are willing to chop them up these days (they"re usually all twisty and a bear to chop). Clearing land in NM 50 yrs ago they scraped off the tops, piled and burned them, grubbed out the roots and sold them by the truckload. These days, if that"s a residential lot, you might want to inquire (discreetly) about using herbicides; some regulation might come back to bite you. Good luck.

"remedy" mixed with diesel(1qt/gal). Spray a band about 2" high around all trunks. Best put a dye in the mixture to tell you which trees have been sprayed. Also contact the county agent for further help

You definately don't want to cut them off at ground level. They will grow back with a vengeance and loaded with thorns. I grub them around the farm with my backhoe. You will need to get down about 8" to make to kill the root. The backhoe is definately the way to go if they are really thick or very large. I've grubbed more than my fair share with a grubbing hoe too. This works fine if the trees are small and you get at least 8 inches of the root.

Truck, 50 years ago I lived in West Texas and the farmers would use dozers to blade the mesquite off the surface and pile it up then burn it. Then they would use deep diggers on the dozers to break up the root systems and rake them up and use them for BBQ or burn them in piles too. I would ask the locals what they do to get rid of the stuff. You might be able to spray it with Roundup which is systemic and will make the roots rot away as well as the rest of the plant if you are not in a real rush for clearing. My mothers family farmed near Coleman in the 30`s.
