O/T: Medical Insurance for Veterans?

This is kind of O/T, but I know there’s a lot of vets on this board.

I spent four years in the military. Since I’ve been out, I’ve paid for my own health insurance. I recently got hurt, and it looks like my insurance covers about 80% of the costs, with a $2500 deductible.

Since I’m a veteran, do I get any additional insurance coverage through the VA? Will they pick up any part of the bill that my own health insurance doesn’t cover? I’ve never been to the VA, so is this something I have to sign up for, or does it happen automatically?

DD 214 is a must, I would advise you contact service officer. Not to file a claim but to find VA clinic close to you. They can advise you on what you need to get started. Time to get going is now. Most Vet.Orgs. will help, (don't have to be a Vietnam vet to get a VVA rep to answer your questions). Post this site again & let us know how you made out.
Thanks for service

Your questions answered in order ask. No, No, and the VA doesn't do anything automatically. You have to fight again for it.

I was told there is a 6 to 8 month wait to get certified for VA health care. They are that far behind in getting paperwork done.

It has something to do with income & weather you have insurance they will not pay if you don't go to VA hospital . My insurance & medicare pays part & I still have to pay some but not near as much as if I went to local hosp . Drug care is $7 a month per. prescription that is hard to beat. they have to have DD-214 or they won't talk ot you .

Unless you have a service related injury you will recieve only basic medical care at a VA Facility if you qualify. You can recieve other treatment for a price, usually lower than outrite direct costs,. Sometimes they will accept payment from your insurance co. but you must still pay the rest. The meds are $8 per month for what they prescrbe. You get them 3 months at a time. Under no circumstances will they pay anything after you insurance.

Your status as a Vetern varies and will determine the degree of Medical benefits you may get. Only way to be sure is to contact the VA. Have your DD214 handy and give them a call. In my case I called and they said to bring in my DD214 and have a talk with them. It took about 30 minutes and the man looked at me and said " you are in". So far I have used them for Meds. and routine checkups and rely on my private insurance to cover my other problems but the time approaches that I may have to rely on them alone. Good luck and thanks for your service.
