I visited an old friend today that I haven’t seen in years. I could see welding flashes as I was walking toward his workshop. I kind of stood back while he was welding. He looked up and seen me standing there and said hey you’re the guy I wanted to see. He said you’re a good welder could I get you to weld the sheet metal on his Oliver fenders.
I told him that I couldn’t weld anymore and explained why I couldn’t do this.

In the meantime there was another guy that stopped in to see him also. We got to talking about my Defibrillator that I had implanted a few years back. He was telling me welding shouldn’t affect this device at all. I know when I had this put in back in 2002 they told me to stay away from any high generated electrical fields, cell phones, batteries, ac generators.

I think I got my friend other friend a little mad at me when I told him that I wasn’t know way going to try it. He said his neighbor had one put in years ago and he still welds. I just found out last fall when I had my check up on this ICD what the battery cost for this. Well it was a good thing I was sitting down when she told me. Around $36.000
Mine was checking just below half yet if you read it like a fuel gauge.

Well to me he had nothing to lose buy say that but I"d rather be safe than sorry! I love doing welding before this all came about. (I still miss it today)
Just wanted to see if anyone out there on YT forums had an ICD Implant that has tried to weld or is welding? Maybe this guy is right and I shouldn"t of said anything.Take Care Thanks Mike

Just a little off subject, but I read several years ago,I think it was in Farm Journal, somebody with contact lenses, struck an arc without his helmet down, burned out his iris' and blinded him. Anybody heard of anything like that?

I used to work with a guy who had one. He said he could not weld anymore because of it. When he had the battery replaced, we told him we would have been glad to do it for less $ LOL. Greg

I like to thank all of you for your comments and I guess I will just let someone else do the welding for me. TO Mike in Pa. My ICD is a Defribillator over Pacemaker. I only use the Defribillator side. My electrical part of my heart is not functioning no more. I haven"t had any problems with it so far. Been behaving myself I guess. But I still do think about welding yet. Thanks you guys! Mike

I am a young guy so I dont know much about ICD but I assume you mean "pacemaker" in simple terms? We have a guy at work that has a pacemaker and he still welds. Officially he isnt supposed to go over 130 amps, but he has. When they check it they cant find any interferance above the normal level. He doesnt do high freq tig welding anymore. Just decided not to push his luck...

Just to make it clear-- pacemaker is one thing. ICD ,inter cardinary device or something like that, is a pacemaker plus a "ZAPPER". It will charge up capacitors to a high voltage and wap you. Like you see on TV all the time. Might not use both fuctions. Bout the size of an old pocket watch and the battery is good for 6 or 8 years. they do not change batteries in my model--they throw it away and replace it.

I kind of go along with Drill. The factory man finly told me probably OK, but bring the cables in straigh to you and as far away as you can. Seemed to worry more on the cables than the arc. He realy did not want to talk about it till I pressed him. The biggest thing they keep telling me, is do not lean over an alternator when it is charging. I think-I THINK- that if there was a problem it would just stop the unit from fuctioning if you needed it, not to do any thing bad.

I can't believe how many of us have a ICD. Mine 3 years and battery is 2/3 full yet. Just sits there in case I need it. Best damm confort blanket ever invented. (List was 148 thousand)

On the other hand you might give the Mrs. quite a suprise if the welding RF charged up your battery.

I had one implanted about two years ago. The manual that came with it said some welding is fine, just don't do it for a living, and don't drape the welding cable right over it.

I have done some welding since then, not as much as I use to do. When I go in for my yearly checkup at the pacemaker clinic the computer can pickup every time I've done any welding. It shows up as a unexplained anomaly on the read out. So far I haven't noticed any problems with it.
