Need some feedback from the experts here. My garage doors are metal and I'm getting some rust coming through. I know to use a preminum exterior latex but, what type of primer, kiltz or bin, water or oil base. I guess the paint thats on them is probably a baked on enamel, but I really don't know. Any advice appreciated.

I'd check out the price of a new door I bet it won't cost much more than the paint to make it last a year or two longer. Next time get an aluminum door.

A freeway is coming though my place in a few years so the paint will make it look nice when my house goes up for sale. I thought about new doors and that would be the best solution, but I won't be living here many more moons. Got to start all over, again.

I found out the latex paint will actually cause rust if you paint it on metal because of the water base. Use some kinda oil base paint. Paint it how you would your tractor.

As said, use a qualtiy paint for best adhesion. Maybe latex is better than other paint because of the vibration factor. Or call the garage door manufacturer for a recommended product.

Most of your DTM-direct to metal- paints are high-high quality acrylic latexs. The newer acrylic components used have excellent adhesion. Most major paint manufacturers will have DTM's in their industrial lines- Sherwin Williams, Progress Paints also Kurfee's/Grayseal, etc. The chain store brand paints will not- Ace, Behr, Glidden. The DTM's also will have their own primers-use the entire package from one manufacturer for best results.

I'm sure some of the other fellas can add to this, but first you need to get control of the rust. Try to find what's causing it, where the moisture is getting in (hinge, bad weather gasket, etc.) and seal it. Next, wirebrush or sand the loose rust off and clean the area with solvent or thinner. I would then spray the rusted area with a product like Extend which locks the rust and converts it to essentially primer. Now, others may disagree, but I would not repaint it with latex. My preference would be an oil based or polymer paint designed for use on metal, perhaps an epoxy or urethane.

Been there done that. Used Rust-O-lem, True Value stores have a similar product made for steel. A quart or a gallon and a hand wire brush to clean the bad spots it will look good. Any good house paint will go over it and last.
