are you talking automotive, or other(tractor/appliance/ect) I know in the auto industry wood model maker is not an apprentaciable trade any longer...the ones they do have don't really make models any more...most of the pattern work is now computer generated and built on rapid prototype machines that need very little hand work. they can produce 3-d models with these machines that are very accurate and can accomidate shrink, draft , ect,and are updatable very fast what used to take a journeyman 80-100 hours can now be done in under 40...also 5 -axis milling machines are more affordable , more accurate , and quicker than doing things on the bench the pattern makers are basicly religated to gluing up blocks for the mill , and decking out minor imperfections....
