Did you know if your transported to ER while unconsicious that you will most likely get labeled , "overdose", if you have been prescribed any type of pain releiver.

The "overdose" is reported to the Poision Control center in the State you live in and is mandatory or is in Arizona. That "overdose" diagnose stays on your record even if the that was an incorrect diagnose and there was another issue causing the problem. Poision Control checks daily with the hospital to see how you are progressing and ???.

So what's the big deal? Try to go get a job that requires a phycic evaluation and you won't pass it or even be considered because you could have tried to commit suicide. Who would take the time to read the fine print if the label says your unstable and have suicidal tendancies?

They also do NOT pump the stomach on a suspected overdose diagnose on adults. Of course that would prove there therory of drug overdose. In our case it has delayed correct treatment for 3days of the real problem, excessive spinal fluid pressure, all because of the wrong label being appiled.

For the ones that missed my orginal post, My 37yr old daughter was transported Friday night with severe convulsions, unconsicious, not responsive to voice or touch. Reminded me of someone with epileptic seizures (no history).

Current health: Sept 06 diganose with stage1 kidney cancer. Kidney is supposed to be removed in 3wks because of the cancer. Hip joint replacement 5yrs ago. Severe soar thorat that responds to antibiotic but keeps coming back.

She did not require CPR for helio transport. They ventilated her and she bit her tonque during transport locking her jaw. More drugs at ER to unlock her jaw and stop the seizures. Head CT scan was clean.

Were now day 6 of drug induced coma with a ventilator as this keeps the convulsions down. They did a lumbar punchure (spinal tap) and found excessive high pressure. Normal is suspossed to 15 and the meter goes to 57 and the daughters pressure was way higher than 57. We don't know what's causing the excessive pressure but that's what they now think caused the severe convulsions.

Sorry to hear about your daughter. Have they tested for viral or bactirial infections in the CSF (ceribral spinal fluid) or in the centrl nervous system?

Most unconcious patients that have a prescription for pain relievers are initially tested for an overdose because it is the most obvious coarse of action. This by no means should label anyone as an overdose. The medical world starts at the obvious and works their way to the rare diseases and conditions. They should also put a tube down into the stomach for content removal when the patient is unresponsive. Any labeling or diagnosing of an "overdose" should be contested when there is no proof of an overdose. The diagnosis should also indicate what the overdose was as well as records showing the treatments of that particular type of overdose and the patient's response to the treatment.

Oh, and an attorny would find the time to read the fine print if it was the right job.

First time read you post, T-Bone.
My heart and prayers goes out to you, your daughter and family.

I can relate to your situation cause my own daughter went into kidney failure ten years ago when she was 7. She had a transplant at age 10 and just this past August, her body rejected the kidney. She has been on Dialysis since August. Two weeks ago, she had seizures and spent 4 days in ICU at Texas Children's Hospital. Released on Friday from ICU then sent home on Wednesday of last week. Our family showed llamas at the Houston Live Stock Show this past weekend and she was week, but wanted to show her llama. She did and won Reserve. She is 17 now and because of issues with her being under weight, she is not on the transplant list. It is tough for a 17 year old with an active high school social life to be on dialysis at home every night.

I feel like the medical professionals is our second family and the Med Center is our second home. For on old man almost in his 50's, I sat many a days in tears in the dialysis unit of Texas Children's praying for all those little ones as they are in discomfort from hemo dialysis.
These are all his precious children.

Hang in there T Bone, your not alone.
Duane

Hi Duane,

I would like to hear more about your daughters seizures if you don't mind. I've included my e-mail addy.

We had a huge day at the ICU today. The Doc brought our daughter out of coma while we watched. No convulsions. Eyes were open but not really concentrating on visual cues. She would blink her eyes, sqeeze the Doc's hand, lift her right leg, when asked in a loud voice. Repeated all tasks twice when asked.

I guess she needed to show us she was making progress as we were discussing long term feeding and breathing tubes. lol

Seams like we may on to the road of recovery. Sure had me very concerned for awhile.

Duane, I am 52 and had a kidney transplant 16 years ago and it is still working. Spent 8 months on dialysis. Tried both types of dialysis. Doing pretty good now. I only missed two months of work and have been working full time and farming part time ever since.

I am always happy to talk to other kidney failure folks If I can be of any help. gene_painter@afbisinc.com

Keep the faith, Gene

Good Luck and hope she gets well. The medical system is sure screwed up. That's why they call it "practicing" medicine. Just too much guessing going on.
