I know this topic had probabbly been beat to death-but I am looking at a 2001 extra cab long bed 4*4 1500 chevy. Are these engines any good? what type of fuel mileage can I expect? It is on a lot and they want 10500 for it ( 100000 miles and supposively in great condition). My main issue is no working knowledge of the engine.
Thanks
JF

I have suggestion for you. That truck has an hour meter on it, find out what hours it has and then do a calculation on how far it ran each our based on the mileage. My truck runs around 35 miles for each hour it has run which represents a lot of road miles. If you come up with a figure of say 5 miles for each hour, that tells you it has a lot of stop and go miles or has idled a lot. I have had 3 5.3's and I average 15.5 mpg. On the road 18 mpg is not unusual.
The old 5.7 did a better job towing or hauling a load because in my opinion, it had more low end torque.

Another thing I do when looking at a used vehicle is walk around it and look inside the box. If it is dented or scratched up, the owner wasn't careful with it and probably didn't take care of the maintenance required.

That many miles is nothing for that truck. I currently own a 99 ext cab long box 4X4 all original with a 5.3 in it and 265000 on the odometer. It was a contractors truck and did it's share of towing as well. I bought it with 233,000 miles on it for $6000. I was afraid at first but finally realized that many miles is testimony to the quality of the vehicle and the care that was taken.

$10,500 is only inflated because it's a LOT PRICE but that goes for any LOT VEHICLE. I had access to my trucks life history and maintenance, which was thorough. If you can say the same for the truck you are looking at I would not be afraid to but it - it's barely broke in.

My 2000 gmc yukon has the 5.3 in it. never had a problem with the engine.. seems real powerfull.

Milage seems high on the uit you are looking at, with that price in mind.

Personally , I don"t think I would give that kind of money for a truck with that kind of milage on it. That being said , the 5.3 is a good dependable engine. Mine has around 110,000 hard working miles on it. Still very strong. Empty , it will get 15 miles per gallon MAX. Pulling trailer , it will get 9 miles per gallon MIN. From what I"ve read/herd , most people get around 14 miles per gallon average. One good point about the truck your looking at is; with 100,000 miles on it , the things that normally go wrong , have most likely done so , and have been replaced. That"s how it was with my truck anyways.
