How is the track tension adjustment piston removed from the seat on the recoil spring on a John Deere 450D? The manual shows that it is just seated on there, and is held in place by pressure. Perhaps it is just corrosion, the dozer was used on a beach and exposed to saltwater. Any suggestions

They can be a bear to get apart. We've tried everything through the years to keep them free, but never had any luck. One advantage on a highlift is you can wrap a chain around a tooth on the bucket and around the yoke. You have to be careful but it works. good luck.

The end of the piston fits into a recess in the cast-iron end-cap of the recoil spring. It's a loose fit - nothing holds it there but pressure from the track. Usually you can just lift if out by hand. If it's stuck, it's just rusty - assuming you've loosened the track already. Sometimes the stop-bolt inside the recoil spring assembly breaks and then you cannot loosen your track.

take it off & pump it full of grease till it comes out. Sometimes no amount of heat, no pipe wrench, panther pea or grease will make them come out. In that case make a spacer, pull the track as tight as you can, put the spacer in & run it that way. Or buy new or used.
