I usually buy the Riggs workwear jeans by Wrangler. You can get them at Gabriel Brothers pretty cheap and they seem to last quite a while, much longer than any Levi's I've ever owned. Plus they have a small pocket type thing for a tape measure and also a hammer ring.

My wife bought me a couple pairs of Carhart jeans a few years back and I was not impressed. They were comfortable, but very quickly developed holes around the back pockets.

Levi's are not what they were, but they still last longer than anything else I've tried. My main complaint with Levi's is that the quality has always been inconsistent, even 20-30 years ago. A couple of months ago I picked up a pair of Levi's, same size as always. When I got them home, I found out they were about four inches too short! After my wife got done laughing at my "high water" pants, she put them on and they fit her perfectly. She's 5'1", and I'm 5'11". She got a lot of mileage out of that, telling everyone how she got the pants and how ridiculous they looked on me.

I had exactly the same problem with Levis, so I just started buying the $10-12 jeans at wally world. Don't feel so bad when I throw them away after they get to looking bad like I do with Levis that cost 4X as much.

What do Carthart jeans cost? are they more then the Levis? or wranglers? The levis are crap, they only last a year or so until they have holes in them.

Would you also mention the rivits are terrible when cold weather hits. Winter goes right to the skin, they were the only brand I did not like in the cold days.
