Solenoid! Solenoid! Solenoid!

Therein lies your problem. We just had the son in laws 424 carb rebuilt and solenoid replaced. Cured it.

does your solenoid have an adjustment screw on it? mine does not. mine has not been connected with a wire in twenty years and has worked just fine. i can't see how this would affect it.

thanks for your comments.

Mine has an adjustment screw on it, but it is boogered up. And as before yes mine looks to have had the wire disconnected for many years.
I think this will kill the tractor right off if it is closed. I think (not sure) that it blocks off the main jet and not fuel to the bowl.

Someone mentioned this in the thread, but I did not see you respond. Take the cap off and take a good look with a flashlight inside the tank. I also had a plug in the bottom of the gas tank on my 2424. Symptoms were very similar to yours. I finally fished out a piece of golden rod or maybe old fuel soaked wood. It would run for a while until the fuel draw pulled it into the nipple in the bottom of the tank - then it would die.

I am assuming that you start the tractor on carb cleaner and it runs for 2 min on gas ?

If so the carb is getting fuel but not enough and the bowl runs dry. Might trying pulling the drain plug as soon as it stops running and see how much comes out.

actually, it starts on gas usually and runs for about two minutes and dies, to keep it running after that you have to use carb cleaner.

if you let set for about two hours it will start and run for another two minutes.

ERP, I had the same thing happen to me last year and it nearly drove me nuts...for me it was the needle valve in the carb sticking...just a tap or two on the side of the carb with a SMALL hammer was enough to do the trick. Give it a few seconds to let the bowl fill, and you should be off to the races...you can tell by the sound of the elect. fuel pump if the needle valve opens. If that is not it, I would check out the elect shut off solenoid.
Hope this helps.

Check to see that the gas cap is venting....How long will it run if you leave the cap loose or even off?

first question is gas getting to the carb ?

If gas is getting to the carb, the carb probably needs cleaning. ALL smallports and passages must be clean.

Had this tractor sat for a while without running ?
If so the carb is probably plugged up with gum and varnish from old gas.

Did you dissassemble the carb to clean it ?
If not I suspect something is plugged up in there.

Hmm, either missed a passage, or maybe not enough vacuum to operate it. They can run on carb cleaner when the vacuum is still too low to make the carb work. Or perhaps the electric fuel shutoff solenoid if it has one.
Float level ok in the carb ?

It does have good fresh gas right ?

Without you being a bit more subjective, I assume there"s not enough of it to keep the engine running.

I WOULD ASSUME SO, GAS IS INSIDE THE CARB, WHAT COULD KEEP IT FROM RUNNING? CARB CLEANER IGNITES AND MAKES IT RUN.

Does that carb have the electric solenoid fuel shut-off? Is it working?

yes, but the wire to it has never before been connected to anything. the tractor has run fine for twenty years without that wire connected to anything.

Same here on the solenoid, but perhaps it somehow closed back. Not sure how the previous owner jimmied it open.

Do you know what position the needle that sticks down insode thje carb is supposed to be in. mine does not have the adjusting screw on top, but the needle that would operate if hooked up is all the way down. thanks,

Sorry no have not had to take mine apart yet, but I don't think it would run 2 minutes if the shutoff was operated.
I think you have a fuel flow problem.
