On my JD 4030 the guage is showing that the alternator is over charging. It has the delco remy alternator,is the regulator in the alternator? We took it off and had it checked at Autozone and they said that it was good, but does that tell if the regulator is working right? I think that they said that it was putting out about 14 volts and they said that was right. Should I replace the regulator? Thanks

The guage is showing overcharged and sometimes the alternator will get hot and you can smell it,the tractor has a warning light that comes on when one of the guages get too high and it starts blinking, the batteries have not boiled over. The tractor gets cranked and runs most of the day and sometimes this winter it would be cranked just to move it. Thanks

When you say the alternator is over charging, does that mean the guage is reading too high (14 volts is normal in most cases) or is the battery getting too hot, boiling, acid fumes ect. The delco for that year model has built in regulator. We need a little more information to figure it out.

Is the gauge reading volts or amps? In winter 14.2 V is normal and summer 13.8 is the usual. If it's an ammeter the current should gradually drop after the tractor runs 5-10 minutes. Does this tractor get started and ran for hours? Or started, putt around 10 minutes, shut it off, start, putt around 10 minutes, shut it off, start, putt around 10 minutes, shut it off?

A tired battery may be accepting more charge than a good one would - have the battery checked too!

I do not know about the JD4020 specifically, but Delco alternators used external regulators on most of the alternators until about 1974. This was true of the Chevrolet automobiles. The external regulators were of the electro-mechanical type with points inside.

He says it's a 4030. 4030's have internal VR's.

Check the voltage on the tractor with a known good voltmeter. (e.g. a good digital multimeter) If the voltage is indeed high, then you probably need to replace the regulator, assuming that your tractor has a separate alternator and regulator. But it doesn't make sense if it has a separate regulator that the auto parts store would say it is putting out 14 volts.

Note that the regulator will vary the output voltage by temperature to avoid overcharging in hot weather. So if you're used to seeing 14 volts in the summer and it's reading 15 volts in winter, this is normal.

14 volts is correct. Nothing wrong with the alternator. What does your gauge read? It may be faulty!

The regulator is in the alternator. Since it checked "good" there MAY be a problem on the tractor... corroded connector that plugs into the alternator or the lead to the #2 "voltage sense" terminal may be broken inside the plastic covering on the wire.

Check the voltage on the #2 terminal in the connector... there should be battery voltage there key on OR key off.
