Hello Everyone,

Last year was my first year of boat ownership.
I followed directions for winterizing my outboard
engine by changing the oils in the transmission
(lower unit) and the engine itself. Then, I ran some stabil through it. Finally, I fogged
the cylinders and put it to bed in the barn.
What I was wondering is if I should once again
change out the engine oil before beginning
to use it this spring? Does enough water vapor
form from condensation in cold storage to cause
problems? Or, am I good to go for the season without any additional service?

Thanks for your input.

Tim, Ohio

HI tim I"ve been a marine mechanic for the past 20 years now and we are in a very cold winter climate. Fogging a 4 stroke is not necasary if your not storing to long, but the only damage is possable fouled spark plugs. Double check you oil levels back it into the water and fire it up, make sure it"s pumping water, check temp at the top of the head area should be about 145 degrees after running in gear for awhile. When draining water the pwr head will drain and the leg will drain but the water pump which is in the top of the lwr unit will not drain. You need to crank the motor over about 5 rev to drain, don"t let it start thou. Now that it has sat all winter don"t spin over with out water. sorry so long but if you need more infor just post

4 cycle outboards are nice, aren't they? Fogging the engine may have fouled the plugs a bit. They should clear themselves fine once you launch; just be sure never to run the starter for more than about a ten-second burst without time to cool off.

Even a quarter turn of the engine will do in a dry water pump impeller, so don't check that battery by just hitting the starter a little bit before you launch.

Another bit of experience: for some reason I popped the cover on a 35 Honda before dropping it into the water one spring. Something looked fishy, so I took off the air cleaner housing. Inside were 45 acorns. I don't know how well it would have run had I started it.

Several of us have shared that outboard for ten years now, and it was used when we bought it. One impeller, a yearly oil change and a few spark plugs are about all it has asked of us. I've never seen a better outboard motor.

If this engine is a I/O, I hope you removed the drain plugs and blew the water out of the block. Hard water over the winter will crack a lot of things on a boat motor.

No, this is just a 4-stroke outboard.
As far as I know, all the cooling water drains out while it is upright on the boat.
I did not find anything in the owner's manual
concerning any type of drain plug in the block.

I suppose by your description it's a four stroke?
(ie: changed the oil? "and the engine itself.")

At any rate after fogging the cylinders, which is not always advised in four strokes, you probably have pretty much fouled the plugs (spark plugs) I would suggest after you get it started and run off (smoke away) all that fogging oil, you put in a new set of spark plugs.

Beyond that, you should be good to go. I hope you stored it with the motor in the down position as water can drain from motor into lower unit cavities and freeze if you don't
