Is anybody watching fed cattle prices today? April live cattle are at $100.10 right now. Feb 08 at 98.50 !! I'm getting a nose bleed. Afraid to breath for fear of toppling the whole thing. I should be out in the feed lot giving them a massage or something when they are worth that much! Local stockyards were as high as 95.50 this week.

Sounds good since corn is now over $4.25 a bushel and everything else keeps going up maybe some of us can make a little more money in the next few years.

hey walt it is your responsibility to keep the cows in not the neighbors to avoid hitting them when they are out.

Clint

Yep,

If that cow was in the road, 'taint the neighbor's fault. It's yours.

Dam I only got .59 for my yearling heifer last month. I in the process of increasing my breed heard right now so maybe things will look up in a couple of years. Lost my best cow last winter when a dumb neighbor ran over her how can you not see a 5 ft. 4 in. cow that weighed around 1800 lbs. Hit her dead center in the side she died later that night. then wanted me to pay for his truck damage "You got to kidding right"
Got a letter from my insurance today they said that they had settled with the Dummy. Good thing I have my small heard insured I got $2700 for her and the unborn calf and my friend with the big family got a lot of hamburger. I used to get around .80 to 85 for heifers it must have been a real bad day when I sent this last one in.

Walt; Better wake and see the real world. if its your cow hit yes you pay for it.. Anything on the public portion of the road that is yours buy ownership papers and it gets hit you foot the bill.

Walt, I know you feel bad about your cow and all but you better watch your fences or someone might end up owning YOU! It does happen.

We don't buy any feed, put everything we grow through cattle,so paydays look pretty good for a while.

I can't see why $1.00/lb fat cattle are out of line. Five years ago when they were 60 cents, I was paying 85-90 cents/gallon for off road diesel that I'm paying $2.50/gallon for now. I think the fuel price has beat the cattle price increase.

I'm sure not complaining. Not with two lots full of them out there.Just didn't think we would ever get back there without Japan and Korea opened up to pre 03 levels. Sure is a nice day ain't it?

Well the old saying goes "cheap corn makes for cheap meat". I think we are going to have a period of adjustment in all phases of the business until more is known about planted acreage, weather, ect. As a corn grower it sure is nice to see some $$$ for a change. I know dad sold corn for over 2 dollars a bushel in the late 40's, I've looked it up in the old farm ledgers here. On the other hand I've heard talk of 300 dollar an acre rent too. That's just reckless IMO. BTW, dad spent some of that money on a new Oliver 88 diesel in 1950. No way I could begin to buy a new tractor of that magnitude today!

I sent a few 800 lb steers today. Had them all locked in the holding pen for the trucker before I headed to work. Got a call from the trucker, that one got excited and went out over the fence. He couldnt catch it. Now I have one odd ball I gotta send in seperate. Twice the trucking and big discount on price since he isnt with a group...Always something....

Sure is...I was sitting here last Wednesday evening watching This Week in Louisiana Agriculture, all alone, wife and one girl had gone, sons and other girl weren't home from work yet and I saw something black go by the window up the road. Thought somebody was driving in.No such luck. 700 pound steers headed up the road. I ran out and they came back in the yard. Checked to see where they were coming from, they had a gate off the hinges from a pen of 60 of 'em. Ran a tractor and the manure spreader between the barn and silo to stop the hemmorage, parked another one and mixer wagon at the other corner with another tractor and the loader tractor ahead of that one to corner the ones in the yard. The one son got home 10 minutes or so later to help finnish cleaning up. If it wasn't for these prices,I'd wonder why I keep it up.

What does that price actually mean? Is it the price of an entire calf?

These prices are for slaughter cattle and are $'s/cwt( cwt = hundred weight or 100 pound live weight.) Fat cattle slaughter at ~ 1100 - 1250 lbs.

Probably directly related to the finally decent corn prices. It's about time the actual producer started getting paid for his efforts.
