I'm trying to get a handle on when I should fill up the diesel tank. Which direction are prices headed? What prices have you paid recently? Is this new ultra low sulfur fuel going to cause problems?

The early batches of low ulphur were short on lubricant and weaker pumps gave problems. The ultra low sulphur has pump lubricant added at ther refinery. It's good stuff plus it doesn't stink.

Oh no Johh,

Haven't ya heard? Every blessed engine on the face of the planet is in danger of locking up. Even those fuel injected gassers. Things will never be the same again.

Change your ways. Repent and buy the snake oil! Do it now while there is still time. :>)

I'm with Allan. I burn up a lot of diesel in a months time and haven't seen any differences in running ULSD compared to the old stuff. Course I guess I am old fasioned. A lot of these guys were making hombrew concoctions of ATF, 2-cycle oil, MMO, and all kinds of other crap to use with the old fuel yet. I would maybe pour in a splash of powerservice once a year and the rest just straight diesel. Always worked good for me, hundreds of thousands of miles later and no problems.

Yep, the company I work for rents warehouse space. The warehousing comapny is hired to deliver the materials from the main plant, back to me. Seven trips, seven days a week, 50 miles there and back. The machanic and I are good friends. He says he has yet to see any damage what so ever from ULSD. I persoanlly think things are failing, and its a big coincedense that they are failing now and ULSD is being blamed! Im not going to start or end a debate on it, Ive said my peace.

I bought a straight truck load ( 2700 gal. ) last month . Pretty happy that I gave 1.87 . Who would have thought that would turn out to be cheap???

If you purchase a true premium diesel fuel there will be additives added at the refinery to replace the lubricity lost due to the low sulfer content. If you are running a #2 fuel you will need to add some kind of additive such as powerservice or the like. There is alot of #2 fuel sold out there that is truely crap. I would not run it in my worst enemies engine. Try to make sure that you are at least getting a good fuel. Ask to see the bill of ladding for the fuel transport truck.

I have no idea what fuel prices are going to be but based on my experences with my semi you will be changing filters a lot more often and better plan on additives to fuel to lubericate fuel pump and injecters. Armand

I would top that tank off now! The nymex is rising every day. Not due to problems with the ULSD fuel. The reasons they say the prices are rising is due to the fact that there was a fire at one of the Texas refineries. I am not so sure that this is the cause of ALL of the price increase. The east coast is the biggest user of fuel oil for heating and the temps on the coast are sub-zero right now. This is also a good time to fill because once we pass that Feb 22nd date, the prices seem to do a steady climb until they top out durring the summer when haying time is full on.

I farm and ranch and fuel will start going up as springs work starts(usually). Around Easter. As for the low sulfur you may want to use additives such as howes or a simular fuel system lubricant. the lower sulfer is a drier fuel it will probably shorten the life of many injector pumps. I believe they did this in the late 80's too.

I'm getting the tank filled at work tomorrow. I'll know the price as soon as he hands me the ticket. Can get back to you tomorrow sometime. This in Northern Illinois from a local Co-Op
