I have a 1993 GMC Suburban. Which I know a few of you have. I have a problem. It's a squeaker. The kids call it the big ole squeaking turd. The belt squeaks I've changed the belt,Idler arm, pullys, alternator, sprayed it, put everything I can think of on the belt, stops for a couple of days then starts up. If you could help me out before the kids make up a song about it,would be nice.

It will be one of two things, either water pump is seeping, check vent as prev mentioned. Anti freeze will make belts noisy like that. Also belt alignment, once had a yukon that the p/s pump pully was out a bit and it start squeaking after a few days with a new belt.

Rub both sides of the belt with a bar of soap. Motel size works great. Don't do it while the engine is running. Might have to do it a couple of different times. If noise continues, it is probably a bearing somewhere.

1) squeaking idler tensioner pulley. take belt off and spin this pulley to check for bad bearings
2) dry belts seem to be even dryer nowadays
4) check and make sure your air conditioning clutch isn't DRAGGING or WORN
3) if all bearings in pulleys check out well, put a tad bit of belt dressing or compound on the belt while running.

I've run into same problem on serpentine belt vehicles. The problem is usually the belt being too dry.Even new ones may be too dry.Dry belts soak up moisture from the air and squeak.

Try a good notch-ribbed belt like Goodyear gator-back.Cheaper belts aren't worth it.

Are you sure the water pump isn't seeping at pump bearing drain hole?

Also check to make sure all of the pulleys are in phase or inline. If you have one off just a little it will make the belt squawk.

Go to a parts house and get some liquid rubbing compound in a bottle. While your engine is idleing, dribble some rubbing compound on the belt pulleys. It will quiet right down.

Closely check all the grooves in the pullies for a little rock or piece of debris wedged in one of them.

Have you checked the water pump for wear... you might try roughing up the flat belt pulley on the water pump a bit with emery cloth.

Also... there were a couple of belt choices just a little different in length for that application. Have you looked at the tightener to see if it's centered between the marks for travel on the tightener? If the belt is a little too long that could be causing the problem.

My 93 ford has squeeked a lot. Only a new belt will cure it. Mine has had 4 new belts on it in its life time. It is worse in damp days.
