What size tire chains do I need?

I bought a set of chains at an auction. They fit on my 13.6 by 38 tires. To fit properly, how far around the tire should they go? Half way from the bars to the rim?
I could not get my tractor up the hill to plow snow, so I had to put them on. Is there a "right way" to put them on? My latches are so stiff that you have to pry them open and closed, but if they were loose do you need to have run a correct way?

Always put the smooth side towards the tire (where the cross bars hook to the side chain) not the crimped side. Also I always put the latches to the front of the tractor when you throw them up on the tire. that way the extra side chain length can be tied back without changing its initial direction. Sounds confusing I know, but it will look simpler when you are out there doing the "hands on"

first thing i would do is get the latches working properly. spray some penetrating oil on them wd40 will work too. then i would lay them out and nice and neat, and make sure the chains are not all twisted up, make sure all the links lay nice and neat. then look for the side that has wear on them, and put that side out, if both sides have wear, pick a side. then grab one side of the chains and throw them up and over the tire. get it straightened out, and then drive the tractor forward or back ward a few feet and hook both ends of the tire chains. i usually like to do the inside one first, and then the outside one, because the inside one is harder to get to. after you get get one side installed, do the same for the other side. then drive it around for a 5-10 minutes , and retighten them. when you stop, make sure the conectors are on the rear side of the tire and near the ground, that is where all the slack is, when you are going forwards.I like to get them tight enough that they do not hit the fenders and make a bunch of racket. if you do not have fluid in the tires you may be able to jack up the rear end of the tractor and let some air out of the tires, put the chains on, and then pump them back up. that way they will be nice and tight.

Put some bungee cords on them also after you get them cinched up.
As far as the latches, there are more different kinds than you can imagine.

No they do not have to wrap around that far but if they do thats ok. If you keep them tight you could get by with 3 inch wrap. also if you lube latches can you get them to loosen up? Latches are designed to go over center so they will not open up.
