My wife drives an 02 1500 with the 4.7 in it,it's been a great car..but no way I would call it a truck..that 4.7 is a high winding, low torque car motor..exactly what you don't need in a truck..I won't hook it to anything bigger than a 12' utility trailer, thats all it wants.. ours gets 16 mpg and really has been great and trouble free, but not what you want if your gonna be pullin much..

I have a 2003 1500 quad cab with the 4.7 I love the truck been almost trouble free (A/C condenser fan motor and tailite bulb) so far at 78k..That being said, while the truck feels plenty strong light, when I hook a trailer to it I keep checking the parking brake to make sure its not on cause it just looses all its low end grunt. It will still do a passable job on the highway with a 19' jet boat and overdrive Off but If you plan on pulling trailers alot the 4.7 just isnt the right engine. My 17mpg@70mph light drops to about 13 loaded some toolboxes and the boat.. Still I have no complaints while its not the strongest truck Ive had it is the best riding/driving truck Ive had so far.....good luck

I had a 2001 Dakota with the 4.7 Loved the truck, but it was NOT a towing rig. I don't know what the rearend ratio was, but that truck wasn't happy pulling a 18 foot "landscaping" trailer empty, much less with a load on it.

It would manage okay (if you didn't mind watching the gas gauge plummet) with a half-dozen sheep, struggle with 100 bales of hay, and flat-out labor with my JD750 and Woods 5' rotary mower.

I have a 2001 Dodge 3/4 ton with the 5.9 gas engine. The only complaint I have is the gas mileage. The only thing I use this truck for is pulling livestock, horse and skidloader trailers. I has not been in the shop once since I bought it 3 years ago. I like the way it rides, and it has plenty of power. But man does it drink gas.

All I know is "Noth'n Partys Like a Rental"!!!!

Keep that in mind when shoping for used rental rides. If it is CHEAP it might not be a bad ride but a rental would not be worth as much to me as one out of some ones front yard where you could get a feel for the guy who had it.

Just the way I look at it.

Dave

My uncle bought an 02 new, made 4 payments on it, Dodge had to buy it back, couldnt keep a tranny in it. He doesnt pull anything heavier than a lawn mower.Hes had his Chevrolet since August of 02 and it hasnt had the first problem in 60 some odd thousand miles.

I had a '98 1500 swb 4X4 with the 5.2....I'm sorry , maybe I shouldn't spoil your party..But , I had terrible luck with this truck..Back under warranty 16 times [ twice on a hook]..I'm 55 , I don't hammer on my vehicles..I've plowed snow for over 35 years..My '79 Blazer was 9 years old when I retired it, never had the transmission pan down except to change the oil and filter once..My '87 swb 4X4 pick-up with meyers 7.5 steel blade and a homebuilt rear box blade on the rear, central hydraulics..In 10 years I had to take it in once for a warranty repair on the transmission..A snapring broke, not a wearout problem..If they didn't rust out so badly , I'd still be driving the '87..I now have a '05 Silverado with only Western 7.5 on the front....No problems...

The 2001 RAM 1500 Sport 4x4 sitting outside in my driveway has ~149,000 miles on it, always starts, has no history of repairs and has been a wonderful truck. Just curious, but what sorts of things d you have to do to these things to make them break? It's mostly used to pull a 6x16 bumper hitch stock trailer (usually full of horses going to the local saddle ckub fun days, etc)!

The only advise on the subject that I have is this. DON'T buy a 4 or 5 yr. old truck off a used car dealer and if you buy it off a new car dealer , make them give you the trade in owners name and # and call them first. There are lemons in all of them and the used car dealers usually end up with all of them because the new car dealers are smart and auction them off. There are plenty of good trucks out there being sold by the original owners every day. HISTORY means everything. Buy from original private owner whenever possible and get warrantee and repair historys. It's a buyers market , use it to your advantage and you will get a good truck no matter what make you choose. I have a '99 Suburban LT and as far as I'm concerned it's in a league of it's own. From what I've seen of the Excursions (their only competition) the Sub,s still have no competition. Chevy and GMC trucks are just Suburbans with a box , so I guess I'm kinda partial to that make over the Dodge or Ford. My brother and his son both lease new trucks every two yrs. In '98 they both went with Dodge and two yrs later went back to Ford and never looked back. I've got a freind that is PURE MOPAR all the way. Bought a used '99 Dodge pickup , sold it less than a year later and bought Ford. Can't really say why but it don't look too good.

How did you know to say zackly what I wuz think地. No way i would have a 4.7 less i wuz rich or gonna drive it till the warranty ran out and dump it. I stay clear of a engine that wuz proven to be not cost effective to fix or lets say not fixable. But many a transmission shops pays their bills try地 to fix the trans in弾m.
