I posted this on the Massey page but got mixed results and did not find the problem. I have a 101 jr. that I just finished rebulding pretty much from the crank up. I fired it up the other day after taking it all apart for the 2nd time and having the head and the block magna fluxed for cracks. When I fired it up and turned up the rmp's I had water coming out of the exhaust. I am stuck!!!! I took all the right precautions and did this the right way but no matter what I do I keep getting the same result. I have rebuilt alot of motors in the past and never had this problem. I am not getting any bubbles in the radiator or am I getting water in the oil. Does anyone have any suggestions on what my problem could be?

Wow I did not think I would get this many responses. I will try to answer all the questions that I can. I replaced all the gaskets including the head gasket I do not remember the name but I did purchase them from this site. I put in new rings and new rod bearings put in new valve seats and valves. I torqued the heads to 85 ft lbs. There are no sleeves in this motor it is a f-162 continental. The water stops coming out of the exhaust after the motor warms up a bit and does not do it again until it cools down and I start it back up. I do not get any change in radiator level that I can tell beacause I really have not run it long enough. I have run it only for about 45 minutes a couple of times just to try an get it up to temp. I did pressure check the the cooling system to see if I could hear or see anything coming into the cylinders through the plug holes. I know that it is coolant coming out and not gas or anything other foreign material. This motor ran well bofore the rebuild and did not blow coolant. The amount of water that comes out is mor than condesation (i think)I hope this helps. THANKS ALOT for all the quick response.

I think after reading all this i would just throw a tube of copperseal in the rad. and run it! If that stops the leak fine, if not, that stuff tends to mark its pathway pretty clearly so you should be able to tell where the prob is. That and the re-torque may just solve the prob. Be sure to let us know how this thing turns out, bunch of curious fellars round here....

Thanks for all the help guys. My internet system has been down for a couple of days so I did not get a chance to fill you all in on what has been happening. I ran the tractor for a couple of hours and it seems to be alot better but I still get some fluid coming out when I first start it up. What I am going to is run it and see waht happens I am starting to think that it is just condensation. I HOPE!!

J...been folowing your dilema all the way from the other forum to this one. i just recently saw or heard somewhere that after a period of running time you need to RE-torque your head bolts to take up the "bolt stretch". since you say it will stop leaking after it warms up, it sounds like maybe you should try this. a lotta folks been bangin their heads on the wall trying to figure out why you're having this problem, including me. i hope someone hits on the answer for you soon.

My Grandpa used to say the devel is always in the details. Need details. Wet sleeves, dry sleeves, no sleeves? What all did you replace during the "rebuild"? Which brand head gasket, and how installed? Torqued to MF manual? Did you catch/smell/examine some of the water to see if coolant? Condition of engine before rebuild? Tom

I had one drawing coolant between the block and the sleeve on one piston.

More information please, or you will end up with mixed responses again.
Is the radiator losing coolant?
Any coolant lost out the overflow of the radiator?
How long have you run the engine, and how many times?
Has it reached normal running temperature?
How are you so sure it is coolant and not condensation?
Try posting that information and it will give us a bit more to work on.
God Bless,
Rex

You mentioned magnafluxing the second time. Did the shop pressure check the head? Pressure testing will often reveal a hidden crack that magnafluxing will not. Also make sure you have the correct head gasket and use copper coat. How long have you run it? Sometimes when you run them awile and retorque, the gasket will take a set and seal? Also very odd you have no compression gasses in the cooling system. Compression is alot more pressure than collant system pressure. You would almost need to have a crack behind of an exhaust valve.

I just gotta ask, before you pulled it apart you did pressure check the cooling system right? Just doesnt add up that you could get water out of the exhaust without getting bubbles in the radiator, or at least Ive never seen that, course theres lots I aint seen....I assume youve run it long enough to burn off any rainwater/condensation, does the water level in the rad. drop? You could try revin it up and cutting the ign. and closing the throttle at the same time to create a high vacuum state and when it stops, pull the plugs quickly and see if you can see water on any and maybe isolate the leaking cyl.

Wow, sounds like you have spent a lot of frustrating hours on this project. We have all been there at some time or another. I haven't looked at the comments on the Massey board, but one thing that comes to mind is just plain old condensation in the exhaust. How much sprays out? You've probably already done this, but you could take a LED pen light and stick it in the spark plug holes and shine it around in there. I would think if water is getting in a combustion chamber there would be a wet piston to show for it.Jim

I know it may sound dumb but..... could it be condensate..... ..try letting run for a while.
