What is a better workhorse? Would a D compete with an R in a pull?

No comparison I think. The R has more weight and power. I love my old D, and I"ve used it in the field for over 15 years, but the R (stock of course) would out pull it and would do it on about 1/2 the fuel. The D is a model of simplicity and is rugged to a fault. With a little care they are almost bulletproof. Just my opinion, I"ve never run an R enough to compare.

The R was designed by Deere engineering to replace the D. John Deere had upgraded the D about as far as it was practical to do. The D actually lasted into the year of 1953 with the last ones assembled in the streets outside the production facility. The R ushered John Deere into the diesel era which was the coming wave of the future.

The D had more Cubic inches but just doesn't matchup in power. R is 45.7 drawbar hp and D 28.53
