Where are you located? I have a Allis WD I was going to ask a little more than that for it but to help a young guy get started I'd let him have for $400 Its runs pretty good and has pretty straight sheet metal on it.

Oliver, just an idea for you but it has worked well for me. Do you have a local radio station that has a tradeing post or country sale call in show. If you do then call them and ask for dead tractors. I have gotten probably 20 plus doing it that way and most have been good one to fix up. Shoot some of my best tractors I have I got that way. Look in my web site and you will see a few. My Oliver Super 88 I got that way but for more then you want to spend. The Allis WC speed patrol I had but got a good parts tractor so I could replace the engine in it for $250 and it ran good and could have been saved as it was but I needed the engine so I used it for parts. Oh by the way how far are you from Cleveland MS. I went to high school there

I live in Missouri now but went to school in Cleveland. My dad was a proffessor at Delta state U back then. I usto delive the mephis paper in that town back then. I got up to throwing about 1500 papers a day before I joined the navy. Last pay check for doing that back in June of 1974 was $225 which was very good money back then. Check out my web page for some of the tractors I have picked up for less then $400 but none will sell that low any more but thats because I have many hours of work in them and a good bit of $$ in them also to get them running. But I have found all colors calling the radio stations and some times you can get a steal of a deal just for hauling one off because the person wants it gone yesterday. Or drop me an e-mail and I'll send you even more pictures of some of what I have. Shoot I may have one here you could get for around $400 and it runs but needs lots of TLC

Want some advice for your son? Here's what to do. Tell him to take the $400 he's saved and go down to the bank and buy himself some kind of an investment certificate, maybe a year or two till maturity. Then tell him to start saving again. Meanwhile, cash in some of your own pop bottles and buy a tractor for YOU AND HIM. Tell him he can pay you back later. You foot all the bills but keep track of everything. He'll learn that it's fun to work with the old man on a project. He'll learn not to p*** away all of his hard-earned money on something he wants but really doesn't need. He'll learn a lot of skills that will encourage him to maybe drive an older car and fix it himself (instead of going broke the hard way buying something new that he can't afford). You'll learn the same things if you haven't learned them already and if you haven't then you'll be better off. I'm not being a smart-arse here, just offering some good old-fashioned financial advice. There's too many of us in this country that can't stand the feeling of having money in the bank and nothing to show for it. Just my two cents, consider the advice as being friendly.

First of all, I'd like to congratulate you on yur son being interested in old tractors. That's half the battle! We do need more young guns 'round here. Secondly, yes, you can find a tractor for $400. I would imagine that if you mentioned your son is wanting a project, the owner would be more generous with the pricing. Good luck.

Got this one for free. Come with the blade and bucket. Motor was a little stuck, had to split in half to repair leak. I've had it about ten years now. Replaced the brakes last year, one front tire about four years ago, gas, oil seal kit, thats about it.

i paid $250 for a Case LA complete with stuck motor. Yeas it can be done but like thye say it will need work.
If his name Is Victor like my friend then he can get a good running tractor for $20 in parts.

Just look around and watch for an old tractor setting someplace looking all forlorn and weeds all over it then ask the owner you can ge them for nothing sometimes.
I would look for one of the smaller tractors it would be easier for the kid to work on and cheaper to fix.
Another friend bought a nice running Case 400 diesel for $600 his kid uses it in tractor pulls.

I've picked up 10 plus tractors for less then that, but, then theres the problem of getting them up and running again and most of the time that will take a couple hundred more and 40 plus hours of work so ya he can find them but he will need more money to get them fixed up.

HAve bought lots of tractors for that only problem is they usually end up needing a lot of work but if you help him out it makes for a good project and he will learn a lot about the tractor my first one cost $50 put a lot more in it in parts, tires, and labor but worked on it with dad and learned a lot

I would say that you could. A year and a half ago I bought a Farmall H and an M for $50 each. They were stuck but complete. Just recently I bought another M and a couple more Hs. One H is stuck and the other 2 are loose, paid $100 for the stuck H and $400 each for the M and other H. All three are complete.

I agree with S F 2, Possibly, I saw a IH 300U in an old shed, and was able to buy it for $200. a few years ago. When I buy anything old and unknown like that, I only offer $crap price for it. That way I can always get my money back, if it doesn"t work out. My $.02.

A couple of months ago I picked up a Massey Harris Pony for 400.00 for me and the grandson. It needs work manifold, front tires, gauges, paint, etc. Talk to people, tell them your son wants one, look behind barns, in fields, tell the junk yard people your son wants a piece of equipment, auto parts store, garage, shop teachers, etc they show up, good luck

For $400 bucks,I wouldn"t count on it. That kind of money would probably only buy a worn-out,stripped-down POS not worthy of fixin" up.

Tell him whatever money he has saved, you"ll match him dollar for dollar on a purchase.$800 is more likely gonna find a good project tractor.

Yes, but it'll be likely the tires will be shot, and the engine stuck. On the bright side, the engine may be stuck, but it might run really well once it's freed up. It's a crap shoot. Anyway I advertised once in the local paper that I "wanted" a Farmall H parts tractor, and I got one for $400. It was stuck but the engine had been rebuilt, all it needed was a new head gasket.

Sure, he may have to do some work on it though. Might find an Allis B or C or maybe a WC, with a stuck motor. Maybe a Farmall too. Watch local auctions or put a wanted ad on here.
