We lucked out and kept our power but parts of Fairfield on north where out for quite a while. I have some friends in Richland and I think they were saying it would be tomorrow or Thursday before they get power back on. In the paper they said that Alliant Energy has over 2,500 poles that broke off over the weekend and I imagine it would take a while to round up that many poles let alone get them set and the wires rehung.

A standby generator is just as vital as. Life insurance, fire extinguishers and steel toed/sole work boots. Of course flowers/card/chocolate on the wife’s birthday, valentines and wedding anniversary goes without saying. 5KW is the absolute minimum. So many people purchase a 1500,2250 or 3500 and think they can run one load at a time. The little generators often can not supply enough volts and amps to start a refrigerant compressor, sump pump or well pump. Generac is American made and good value for the $$$. Parts are easy to come by at Jacksmallengines or smallenginewarehouse. Of course a proper transfer switch is required if powering up the entire service.

Of course

Well,
There was an IH 1586 with loader and cab in the photo ads.
Had new tires and low hours - near Des Moines.
I think they were asking $2500 for it to settle an estate.
I just looked but it's gone now. Must have sold already.

Just joshing you Gary.
Welcome back

Gary,
That Generator doesn't need to sit. There are a lot of things to use it for on the farm. I take mine to the hay field and sharpen the knives on my disc mower. Amazing how much better they will cut if kept sharp. You'll find a way to put it to work. Glad you got power back on. Have a good one.

The word out on the street was that you had gone to the Bahamas for a vacation on those HUGE profits you make from faming ! LoL
Check out my posts from past 2 days - almost convinced myself to buy a RED tractor. I could hire it to you for spring cultivation work, its got a cab, heater & radio ! Just what you need.
Cheers David

Strange intoxication, wonder if there is a law against driving under the influence of red paint?

Gary,

Missed you man! Mom and Dad down there west of Washington, IA were without power for just about 24 hours. Luckily dad still loves his wood heat, and had plenty of firewood to fill the woodburning furnace.

How's that 1066 coming? I've missed your pictures lately.

We had a kerosene space heater we used for heat.

Kept putting off buying a generator thinking it would come back on about the time I did.

Son in law had his welder here over the weekend from work so we had it on the well for water to the cattle.

This morning went and bought a geny as the welder went to work with the son in law.

So it got about 12 hours work and now it will probably set for 10 years.

Oh well the story of my life.

Gary

Where did you find one to buy? I heard Sears in Coralville brought in a semi load yesterday, but were sold out w/in 30minutes. I made a trip to Ottumwa to pick up one from my folks and TSC had 2 as of Sunday morn. The manager was reading the clerk the riot act b/c the clerk had promised both to someone over the phone. The manager was limiting them to one per person/household. Not a kerosene to be found and the only LP ones to be had were the 2 at TSC, and the one at Menards that was missing the hose/regulator.

we were very lucky, only w/o power for about 24 hours, but i'm getting a bit worried, my well still doesn't have juice, and the cistern is getting low.

as of yesterday morn, there were still poles across the road at Little Amana, and west of W-burg, I went 2.5-3 miles before i saw a pole standing--and those are the big poles w/ 6-8 wires on them. Might be awhile before Alliant gets that going.

When Son in Law was on his way to work he saw TSC was open.

Went in and they had 6 left at 7:30am and he was 4th in line.

Called me and told the price and size and I said buy it.

4 more behind him and 2 got left out.

Gary

Yeah, there's some will be out a week.

Those 2 1/2 days seemed like a week to me.

We had about 1" of ice and only about 4" of snow on top.

We had one of the power company workers fall to his death off of a high line tower this morning.

At least you wheren't out for the 6 days I was out, thats when it starts to get real hard on a guy, no computer, no TV, no hot meals, no showers and no water thats never any fun
