I have a dog, a stray that sombody dumped off here this spring.. a mix of some sort.. I'm guessing chow and maybe a redbone hound.. anyhow, he has a GREAT nose when it comes to coons, possoms, cats.. heck you name he can sniff it out.. only problem is, he is scared to death of guns.. (i'm guessing thats why somebody didn't want him to start with) so I would really like to take him hunting, but at the sight of a gun he runs off.. do any of you know of a fix? I would really like for him to get over his fear.. he sure is a great dog.. thanks, Tim

when feeding her let her get her head down in bowl then start about 50-75'away and lite 1 fire cracker and see if you can get her used to the noise and if she don't mind slowly decrease the distance you lite them from her until she no longer flinches .

I'm quite tickled to find out my adopted mixed up black lab is gun shy. I don't dare let her out of the fenced in back yard or she heads right for the road. Even though she's been hit by a car once, she has no respect for them. When she takes off there's no calling her back and to try and catch her is like trying to catch the wind. Once during buck season she got out and took off, a neighbor was in the woods along side the house and got his buck. Along comes old Lucy dog on a dead run for the house and couldn't get in fast enough. Now if she gets out I get out the 12 gage and pop a shot or 2 into the woods. She's usually waitin' at the door.

If the dog will tree, try and shake a few coons down to it, this really will help. If you can get it over being shy of the sight of the gun, and can get to the tree, when it's treeing tie it and praise 'em. I've found that if I use a rifle with CB caps or 22 shorts that I don't shake the dog up to bad. The main thing is positive reinforcement and patience. I've got a healer that's a good tree dog but shy of any noise louder than a 22 short. The thing with her is she's still mouthed on a track and has caught quite a few on the ground, this seems to really turn them on. For a gyp, about 45 lbs, she's a pretty fair kill dog. Just don't use anything with a loud report. We've killed lots of coons with cur dogs. Good luck.

To be safe I always took a new dog for a walk at a wildlife area that has a busy shooting range. I start far away with a pocket full of goodies, and work closer. If they show hesitation I just walk away while feeding treats, then try again. This has worked well, may work to cure your dog.

Once you do what the other posts say and you take him out hunting when you get to the tree before you shoot the gun tie him back and when the coon is shot out lead him up to the coon and praise him for the good job he did. Another thing when you scold him be careful not to do it to hard many good dogs have been ruined that way. just my 2 cents worth.

Try to couple the sight of the gun with something positive. A good way is to have the gun in sight when you feed him. There are methods to desenstizing a dog but they take some time and a lot of patience.

Start him slow and have him identify the gun as 'harmless"..leave it out where he can see it and let him deal with it for a few weeks. If he's shy to the bang, then as he's doing something he enjoys, like eating..start with some blanks in a starter pistol of or something that'll make a bang. Not loud at first but progress up to louder and louder as he gets more comfortable with it. Work him in slow and the point is to have identify the gun with fun.

your gonna have to take this really slow ,,and as others have stated associate gun with good stuff like food etc ...,but don't go to loud or fast sounds like he/she's had some bad experiences ..I've seen idiots just up n shoot the gun behind their rabbit hound to see if it spooks em ...dog never recovered completely..But that guy was pretty braindead at the best a times..
If you'd a got em as a pup I'd say start with banging pots or slammin doors in the house and making every loud sound associated with something good ,be it food or just praise or play ,,you get the picture ,but If I was in your shoes ,man I'd be real worried he'd take off and never see him again ..TAKE ER SLOW..
