Are ammeter connections all the same?

My 1954 Fordson has an ammeter where you thread the wire through a brass ring on the back, but replacement ammeters also come with pos/neg terminal posts where you cut and connect the wire. Are these ammeters interchangeable? Thanks for your help.

The same unless the new ammeter uses and external shunt instead of the internal shunt. The gauge you are reading amperes on is actualy a voltage gauge reading VD across a known resistance.

No need to cut the wire. Just pull it out and use the end that it has on one terminel. Then make a short wire with new ends on it for the other terminal.

There are many types of amp-meter hookups including direct wired, inductive pickup (like you described), and shunt-wired like GM uses a lot. The latter - shunt-wired - kind of lie to you and give you a representative reading.

Cut the wire, and install GOOD terminals. Connect the terminals to the ammeter. If it reads backwards, swap the wires between the studs.

Yes, though with the ammeter having two posts you have to cut the wire. Then the connections depend on the battery polarity. For negative ground, you hook the negative ammeter post to the battery and the positive ammeter post to the load and charging circuits. The ammeter with terminals will probably show current through the wire laid against it but will probably be insensitive.

They are interchangeable. The original ammeter like you described measures inductive amps through the wire by using magnetic fields generated by the amperes passing through the wire. The replacement style works on the same principal, but it works on the inside of the gauge, instead of reading the magnetic fields through the back of the gauge. Just be sure to hook it up correctly, or it will read backwards. I think the + side hooks to the battery, and the - terminal hooks to the switch, but I could be wrong. It depends on wether your tractor is positive or negative ground.
