Hi All,

Thanks for the continued advice. I've been looking for a backhoe to use around the property. Something I don't have to put too much into and will get decent 'homeowner' use out of. There is a MF 50C that has very low hours on the clock, like less than 1000. It looks to be reasonable that it is correct. Not much wear on the pedals and such. No smoke at all. Most of the seals on the rams have been replaced and the hoe is fairly tight. There is however 2 clear issues. One is the swing mechanism leaks fairly good, but I would imagine it's not a huge deal to fix or replace. The one that worries me is the transmission leak. Well, I assume its a trans leak. The cover plate between in the middle of the tractor has a steady stream of fluid that leaks out. Funny thing is the guy put fluid in right before I got there and over filled it and it was also comming out the brake actuator holes where they enter the frame on the rear axle housing. Any clue if these leaks are way too much to have fixed or indicate something awful?

Thanks again,
Keith

I have never saw many MF hoes period that alone should say it all there ,parts could be a night mare I agree find a case or JD since they made billions of them and even used parts are easy to come by .

Before you shell out yore hard earned coins on that thing, check out the parts situation. Go out an find a rebuild kit for the swing cyl and a seal kit for the tranny. Find an price a hydraulic pump too. MF and IH TLBs have a horrible rep as far as parts go. For a "home owner" backhoe its hard to beat a wore out Case or Ford. The JDs an Cats are good too but pricier.

I know nothing about MF hoes.

But, why was he filling it with fluid in the first place? (It was low) Why was it low? (leaked out) Why did it leak? (dunno) Why did he put so much in? (so it wouldn't run dry while you tested it)

Then again, it could have been low due to the leak in the swing cylinder and he just spazzed out and ooverfilled it.

I would PAY a mechanic familiar with MF's to check it out. Money well spent.
