Since so many responded to the first post about this, I thought I would let you in on what's going on. The deputy was right, well mostly right. The GPS tracking devise involved was installed as a monitor when the trailer was used commercialy, and the imformation generated by it was available to anyone that could access the account. Lojak Systems, and their competitors, who sell these as anti-theft units will only activate the unit when the request comes from a bona fide law enforcement agency AND a NCIC case file number has been assigned. They will share this information ONLY with law enforcement. The unit here in this instance, if used to track a theif, became the same thing as a "unauthorised wire tap", according to the local DA's office.

The trailer is now back home. However the details on just how that happened are a mite foggy.

We all know about DA's. My friend always says dumb _ss has the same initials. In our county a upperclass man is the DA. Has not been apposed for probably 30 years. His paycheck comes regardless of convictions. Court dates during income tax time --- there is never enough evidence to make a case. If you watch Jay Leno he stated that our county has the highest drug raids but the least convictions. Sad to say my county is recognized for that issue. We have lots of places to hide their labs, and lots of anhydrous tanks to aid in the process.

I was made aware of the number of cops on the evening beat, three nights of the week there is only one on duty for the entire county.

As we can only assume that the people will have to take the law into their own hands. I simply see no options any more. We have more government employees than ever, some of them have some mighty big titles, and big pay checks. Just not a whole lot of bang for the buck it seems. We have about every local option tax that the well educated can dream up. Seems that the money is always short for buildings, and why buildings are never figured into the budget untill the buildings go to ill repair state.

We are very concerned about invasion of unwanted, but has it not already been accompished? It is a cancer of society that will not go away.

I think the local DA is all wet. It's only unauthorized if the legal owner says it is- the thief has no say in the matter. You can put tracking equipment on your goods to keep track of them if you want. DA is either very lazy, or very stupid, or it could be a double play! Good to hear that you got it back. And from the sound of things, you probably want to keep the details a little fuzzy. If idiot DA makes inquiry, just don't answer any questions- You have no idea what happened. If he wants to pursue it, he has to prove his case, and you're not required to help him.
