lots of posts in the archives about skunks

mid-sized havahart trap baited with peanut butter, place trap on their path or in quiet spot near their opening, leave some room around the trap, do not use trap with spring loaded doors, gravity doors will open for you as trap is rolled upside down with long pole

after they are in, SLOWLY walk toward the trap with old blanket, GENTLY place blanket over the trap and then slide piece of cardboard under the trap, once they are covered up they usually take a nap, what you do with them afterwards is up to your consience

as you approach, watch them real close, they will stamp front feet to warn you that you are making them nervous, stop at that point and let them calm down, took 5 out from under a small shed and no spray, first one is the hardest, I moved them in back of pickup but neighbor chanced it sucessfully with station wagon

they are gentle like a housecat and just want to be left alone

To catch a skunk without getting sprayed, you have to understand the mechanics of the skunk. He can't spray unless he can get his tail in the upright position. If he's in a trap that's too small for him to move around and point at you, then he can't spray you. A friend who worked construction had an american indian working with him- a good worker, he would do a week's work in 4 days, then go out and get drunk for the other 3 days. He got in an argument with a liquor store owner, who cut him off on one of his 3 day binges. Indian went out and trapped a skunk, held it by tail out the car window, pulled up to drive through window and hurled skunk into liquor store. That was the last time they messed with a drunk Indian!

like one other said, they won't bother much, other then chickens, but they DO smell.. what I did was place a live havahart trap close to a corner of a barn, then after you see they are traped, go out in the after noon when they are taking a nap, learn around the corner REAL slow, and pop em' with a BB gun.. worked for me three times so far.. and no sprays.. so I would say it works ok.. just GET THEM IN THE HEAD! or run FAST.. lol.. Get you some Red Fox Urine and spray around. I spray on a rag and tie it to me and walk around the yard. The red fox is a natural preditor of the skunk. When they smell the fox they will leave. I have been doing it for two years now and it last for about three months then I do it again.
Good luck

Skunks are a gentle and sociable animal. I hate to see harm come to them. They will not cause any damage and are quite friendly. When mama gets her kits up and around, she will start taking them outside. When she does, block all the openings she has been using and she will find another den away from the buildings. With the warmer weather they will look for more remote areas.

Skunks can even cohabitate with dogs if you can educate the dog to not harrass them. Skunks only spray for self defense and actually don"t like the smell any more than we do.

The primary diet of skunks is small rodents, bugs, grubs and beetles and often carrion, so they are quite beneficial.... Gene

look for skunk live traps on the net, huntsmart.com is one place. Wicks outdoor is another.
They make a live trap out of pvc pipe, when their trapped they cant spray you, then you can take them away from the house and turn em loose and 22 em or just let them go.

I caught one in my barn in a live trap one time and he was in there 7 weeks with out food and water and was still very much alive. I finally got up enough corage to drag the trap out of the barn with a long rod and a long piece of baler twine. I then shot him in the trap with a 12 ga and bird shot and he still sprayed a yellow cloud twice. LOTS OF LUCK!

Use a live trap, and some green giant peas. When he gets near the trap to take a pea...you got him. HA,HA.

I have heard about this. First you cut a hole in the ice, then put peas around the hole, when he stops by to take a pea, you kick him in the icehole.

J/K

If you find something that works, post it as we have the same problem here. My dogs keep those scent glands flowing.

I was thinking about rat poison in cat food. Not sure though.

It works for elephants but you burn some brush in a hole. When they come for the pea you kick them in the ash hole.

Live trap with dog food for bait. Once trapped, use .22 shorts in a rifle, shoot between the eyes. Generally they will not spray if you dont scare them or stir them up prior to shooting.

Golden Marlin fly bait mixed with dog food. Antifreeze in a dish. I kind of wonder about a live trap as I had a live trap with a skunk in it and I live in town. It was in the dead of summer and he lived 21 days in the hot sun without water or food. Some say place a blanket over the trap when this happens, but I could not get any takers on that one.
