Today when I got home from school dad tells me the 285 is getting an overhaul at the local dealer. Right now the shop is kinda slow so they have a deal going on with their labor charges for the month of February so we'll be getting a little knocked off the top.

We were talking about it about 2-3 weeks ago that the 285 is starting to slobber, is hard to start in anything close to freezing, and leaks from the head gasket down the side of the block. I said I'd be happy to rebuild it for him but we just don't have a shed to park it in and tear down an engine for a rebuild. Some time it's definatly going to need paint though.

Gonna have to strap it onto the 3-16's for break in I think.... Maybe pull the 18' spring tooth for a while too....

It sure will look good once it's painted up next to my 1600 my brother painted and I rebuilt, and the 1855 we bought already overhauled and painted.

Why dont you swing over to the dealer once they have the tractor apart and pick up all the sheetmetal they have off. Take it home and paint it up. Then when you get the tractor back the paint job is half way done...

Because then the tractor won't be done for 2 years like my 1600. We'll get it running first, then we'll see about painting it. Form a distance it don't look 2 bad, but it sure is faded and it's got a few dents and dings in it.

Besides, my brother and I both have too much on our plates right now. I'm working full time plus school and the farm, and he just had a 2nd son about a month ago. Also remodeling the farm house next door so we can get more for the rent.

Don

Always good to do major work in the off season rather than the middle of a busy season. Easier on you, plus the mechanics can take their time and do things right. Not very often it works out that way. She should really be ready to roll up her sleeves and work that 1014 this summer.

I don't think I would break her in on a plow..... that is a little to much for a tight engine.....maybe a PTO job or something she can handle easly,,,,, then the plow later.....
watch the heat guage and change the RPM every 10 min...Don

3-16's is NOT gonna be too much for an 85 horsepower tractor. In fact, Massey recommends pulling a ground engaging implement for the first 100 hours to break in a new tractor.

It's just what pretty much every one says is to work a deisle hard for break in (myself included) and if it has a problem, they stand behind their work.(better than in front of it anyway)

3-16's in our soil is all the 285 ever wanted in 3rd and sometimes 2nd gear. No way am I ever gonna pliow in 1st gear with something that's too big- just faster to drop a bottom and up a gear. We pull 4-16's with our 1855 (105 hp) and that's all that thing wants in 3rd gear too. 1 or 2 feilds pull in 2nd gear but the rest aren't too bad...

Might be better to have the dealer break it in on a dyno then any problems will show up like over heating or any leaks .
