Read the posts on here the other day about dumping Norton Anti-virus and using AVG. My Norton is about to expire and I would like to switch to AVG or something else that is better than Norton. Problem is, I 'm not that good with computer. As the old saying goes, I know just enough to be dangerous. How do I get rid of Norton? Should I get rid of it before downloading something else? If I get rid of Norton, will I be safe going online to download AVG? I would appreciate it if some one could walk me thru it. I think I have Windows ME. Thanks in advance, Chris

Pooh Bear got it right, download AVG but don't run it, save it to your disk. Disconnect from the network/Internet. Uninstall Norton, then reboot. After you reboot, install AVG and make sure it's running properly. Then you can reconnect to the Internet and get all the updates.

Good luck,

You should do a full uninstall and reboot before installing another AV program. Go to Settings-Control Panel and then Add-Remove Programs. click on Norton and remove. I use Avast and its a great program that does automatic daily updates. No problems whatsoever in several years of use. I"m running Win 2000 Pro. For removing spyware I use Spybot--I run it manually once a week or so.

After a crashes with paid for Norton and Mcaffe "protection"? . My computers have run best on paid for AVG anti virus and anti spyware. The softeare firewall has/had some bugs. Best choice would be to ditch the Micro-Crap computer/software and go Apple.I'll never purchase another MicroSoft based system again.

If you go into Grisoft.com and look for AVG Anti-malware, you get a product that gets spyware as well as viruses. The "anti-spyware" bit will not interfere with any other anti-spyware products you have e.g. Ad-aware, it often finds things that the others miss out.

Just go to "control panel", "add/remove programs", and then look for Norton antivirus in the list. Most versions of NAV also have a "liveupdate" component that you'll want to remove, too.

Often the uninstall won't completely remove it. Here is a link to the tool Symantec provides to correct that:

Link

If it uninstalls cleanly and completely without errors, you may not need this tool.

Be sure to remove NAV before installing any new one.

Here is a link to AVG:

BTW, if you get a chance to get off Windows ME, you'll probably be better off. ME was the shakiest version of Windows that Microsoft let out the door.

Just click on your Norton icon and go to uninstall. My wife just did this and installed the AVG, much better and the computer is a lot faster now. Hope this helps. Jim

Before removing Norton download one of the free programs.
I use Avast. www.avast.com
There is also AVG. www.grisoft.com
And AntiVir. www.free-av.com/

Then disconnect from the internet.
Uninstall Norton.
Install which ever program you selected.
Then reconnect to the internet and do the updates.

Good advice. When I download, I usually put a CD in my CD-ROM writer. Than when it asks to "run" or "save" I click "save" and indicate whaever drive the CD is in. As you advised, I then would go off the internet and remove the Norton. As others have said that sometimes works real slick and sometimes not. Then install the AVG or whatever from the CD. I am presently using Norton and my wife is using AVG. Having good luck with both "knock on wood"
