Hi Guys; Well, lots of people up here in the frozen northland has the same problem..or worse. We have been in Ca. for 4m.(to help a sick sister-in law,not on vac.!)When we got home I thought we would have a problem. I did pump the tank down some, so we aren"t doing to bad. Does anyone have any ideas how to open the pipe? Or how someone"s Grampa, or uncle did? (Short of dynamite!)Thanks Bob

If you place straw bales over the area (one deep, but one and a half wide in staggered rows) and cover them with plastic, the ground heat will thaw out the pipes far more easily. If other methods are also used, the insulation just helps a bunch. JimN

Speaking as a Southner with blessedly no experience in these matters, I wonder if putting a wide piece of black plastic over the area would soak up enough solar heat to thaw things out? Just a suggestion.

Bob If you have a straight run a the end of the pipe. Take a piece of half inch pipe about 10 feet long connect that to the end of a hose if available hot water. work the end of the water supply into the frozen block. Using this method i have opened pipes as long as 40 feet, but I usually use steam from a boiler the water will just take longer. hope this helps, THE PIPE GOING TO MY MOUND IS FROZE AT THIS TIME ALSO. Jim;Oh no...I was hoping that this frozen stuff wasn't catchy!! Sorry to hear about the pipe froze. As you know this snow storm isn't much fun to work out in! If we would have got this storm 3m. ago all this would be mute! Thanks and good luck. Bob....Janicholson; Thank you for the reply. I have the area covered, and if we get the snow that will help....KEH; Yes, that does help. It can be 20 below here and the sun has the power to melt snow. We have a brown steel roof on the house. If the sun is out, DON"T stand by the edge!..Bud.. Good idea with the pipe and 1/8 hole. I do have enough hose to reach there. Maybe if I hook up to the bottom of the hot water heater, I can get HOT water! Thanks to all you guys for the ideas! I'll start after the BIG STORM! :) Bob

Bob,
If you can find the end of the pipe where it is frozen and chip some of the ice from the end of the pipe then hook up the garden hose with a straight nozzle that allows you to go from a spray to a stream under pressure and start spraying it at the end of the pipe. Water will erode the ice and as it is dissipated you can continue to push the hose in the pipe. It may take a while to get to the end of the ice dam but you will get there. If you want to be more aggressive hook the garden hose to the end of a pipe that has a cap with an eighth inch hole drilled in the end of the cap. That way you can slam the pipe into the ice and it help break up some of the ice while the water is "melting" the ice. Hope you get it thawed. Bud

Jim; Thanks for the reply. Well, I have the old style, gravity flow, and it's frozen where the pipe comes to daylight, after the drain field.I have chipped some ice and it seems to be froze in 5 to 6 ft. Thanks again Bob

Bob let me know what type of system you have. [mound or trench][ pressure fed or gravity]and also where you think it is froze. I may have some information for you. Jim WJ in MN.
