We had a small bet going on in the shop...What kind of tractor did Mr. Douglas have on the 1960s T.V. show Green Acres? I say it was a early Fordson. Some say it was a McCormick Deering. Please help us out.

Found this with Google on a Green Acres fan site (I'm too young to remember the show):

What brand of tractor did Oliver own?

On the show, his tractor was a Hoyt-Clagwell. In reality though, his tractor was a Fordson model "F" built from 1917-1926 . This was the first actual tractor built and sold by Henry Ford (Ford Motor Company). It was named "Fordson" because of the involvement of his son in this venture. Ford Motor company was a sponsor of the show, thus his car being a Lincoln, Haney's truck a Model "T",and the Fordson. If you remember the show when Lisa bought Oliver a new tractor, the tractor dealer had all Fords, and I believe the tractor she picked was a Ford 6000 diesel. These were built from 1961-1967. The other tractor used at the beginning of the show start was a John Deere "GP" tractor. The "GP" stood for General Purpose, and these were produced from 1928-1935. The McCormick-Deering tractors were #1 in popularity back when these tractors were built, and John Deere was second in line. The three companies engaged in price battles for sales dominance, in which McCormick-Deering came out on to with Deere second, and Ford finally dropped production of the Fordson "F" in retreat. I would guess that the "GP" was his liking, but because of Ford's sponsorship, the Fordson was a requirement.

(Whew! The above tractor information was all supplied by Jerry L. Davis)

This was a great summary, but I read somewhere that Hoyt-Clagwell was actually a tractor brand. Not sure how many were made, but very sure they were not shown on Green Acres. Saw the episode where Lisa bought the Ford 6000. It had an early, relatively unattractive cab with a radio . Also was an episode where a "gangster" attracted to Lisa, "bought" (extorted) a Ford 5000 and had it delivered to the farm. Another episode when the community gets together for a plowing day at Oliver's farm, they show a Ford 4000 and either a Ford 2000 or 3000.

Anyone ever notice the seat mounted on the pulley side fender of the GP that Mr Douglas drives in the show intro? I have had guys tell me it was a D but I slowed the intro down one day to see the tractor better, it has the flat head and the plugs are in the top of the head, unlike the D

There were actually two. The one that was shown in the the sequence in the field where the wheels fell off, etc. was a Fordson. It was called a Hoyt-Clagwell on the show and of course was bought from Mr. Haney(Pat Buttram of the old Ro9y Rogers show). Remember Nellybelle the Jeep? The other was a John Deere GP shown in the opening sequence with Mr. Douglas driving it in front of a barn.
Great memories of reasoanbly clean and entertaining TV.

The tractor used in the show was a Frodson, of course they called it a Hoyt Clagwell in the show, at the begining of every eppisode you see a John Deere that Oliver is driving, think it was a D but been a while since I saw it
