I was the same way with my dad. I was always there helping him, and when he had one of his tantrums I never ran away..(boy could he string his words together sometimes....) Now I'm the one fixing everything, and I remember how something was fixed 10-15 years ago when I was helping dad so I already know what has to be done to get it fixed...

I know he likes having his own mechanic/machinist on the farm....

You should let him wear that fancy auto helmet. Less chance of getting flashed if he doesn't have the dark lens down. You might want to remove the oil and jerry cans when your welding as well as anything with a fuel tank. Remember safety first. Dave

Thats great! I only wish my dad had taken that kind of interest in me when I was his age. As a result I am pretty much self taught for alot of things and learn alot by trial and error. Mike.

yeah ,Mike My ol man left when I was 3 ,took my older brother hunting and fishing ,but always got the "too young "excuse ,by the time I was old enough he was too busy most times .
Learned most of my hunting fishing stuff form an old uncle I work in the Oil n Gas industry Get the welders and machinists at work to steer me in the right direction lots. But I guess I've got couple clues ,,,,somedays !!! other days I'm down right stupid!!!

I had a Grandpa that pulled double duty for me (Grandaddy and daddy) I learned more from him and watching him than any other person. I more or less model myself to him, Taking on his values and when posed with tough question I find myself thinking "What would grandpa do?". He more than made up for what I lacked from my real father and is where I found my love of old stuff especially tractors.

Boy that`s great. My 9 yr old son`s been following me everywhere since he could walk.
Yeah it does take some extra time and precautions, but....
At 9 yrs old and 60 lbs, he`s better help than my 270 lb brother-in-law when it comes to fixing anything. My 7 yr old aint far behind either.
In a few more years, I`ll be helping them instead of them helping me.

Thats great. It seems people are less likely to tear stuff up too when they expirence how hard and time consuming it is to fix or build somthing.

I have a 12 yo stepson and an 11 yo son, and then a 4 yo son. I am constantly wondering how to "interest" them in the shop and learning to do things with their hands. When I was young I was the one going to the shop or the field, I didn't have to be prodded. It's a different world now. My 4 yo is always saying, "Dad, you and me , we gotta get out and do some work!" I think I won't have trouble with him , he's a carbon copy of me.

Build a simple go cart from scratch. Let them use their ideas. Snowmobile engine and some tubing. Steering wheel, wheels, and other extras from junk yard. They will have a blast.

COME UP WITH SOMTHING THAT MIGHT INTEREST THEM, MY LITTLE BROTHER HATED GOING WITH ME AND DAD TO WORK COWS OR DOING ANYTHING TOGETHER, I TOOK HIM TO HIS FIRST TRACTOR PULL AND HE WAS INSTANTLY HOOKED, MY 14yo BRO IN LAW IS THE SAME WAY, ME AND THE FATHER IN LAW BROUGHT HOME TROPHIES FROM A TRACTOR SHOW AND STARTED BRAGGING AND NOW HE WANTS TO BUILD HIS OWN TRACTOR, IT JUST TAKES A LITTLE PSYCHOLOGICAL PERSUASION, IF THEY LIKE FAST CARS OR A CHALLENGE LET THEM GET A LITTLE PIECE OF THE ACTION UNDER BELT, ITS HELP SOME FOLKS

Who cares if it takes a little longer, if he is learning something and enjoying himself that is all that matters. I also take my neighbors son to help me work on my tractors and it is amazing how much he learned about how the engines and tranny works.

Great to see the younger generation taking an interest in mechanical things. One suggestion, though.. Get him started wearing safety glasses,it might save a painful eye injury..
