Hey folks I said my Ford is a 1940 9N but when I matched the serial #'s again I'm not sure. The # on the engine is 9N172147. It seems like it has too many numbers?

Kathy..... ..congratulations, you have the "braggin' rights" to a 1945 2N engine. All 2N engines start with a weakly hand-stamped 9N****** serial number. Since ALL flathead N-Ford engines are interchangeable, your folks could very well have a 1940 9N tractor with a replacement 1945 2N engine. (9N's ended production in March? 1942 at s/n 9N99002) Amazingly enuff, all 2N-parts fitt 9N-tractors. You should note the following: ALL 2N's & 9N's have 3-speed trannys. Only 8N's have 4-speed trannys. You may have a dealer installed 2-or-3 speed "auxiliary tranny" shifter over your left toe, but NOT all tractors have that..... ...HTH, Dell

Thanks Dell and Old.... I am going to have to look again to see if it's a faint 9..seems to me it looked like a pretty strong 9 but the number looked to me liked it fit in the 1945 era. The engine does purr though and does a mighty good job of plowing snow with a three point back blade and carring fensing supplies with the front end. Just doesn't want to lift a 500-600# bale on a bale spike on the three point but will lift it with the Dearborn fel. Although the fluid rear wheels got a bit light. The neighbor down the hill doesn't want us moving big rounds around anyways considering our brakes don't work from being greased by leaky rear axle seals. He is a little nervous!kat ps how can I attach a picture?

Dell..this was a small bale our friendly hay guy gave us for a try. Really appears to be around that 5-600#s got a little wet but on it's rolling side..carried it around on the front with out tipping. Now the 3pt spike won't pick up. We probably will try to buy a bigger tractor or get a hay dolly. Right now just feeding 11 Missouri Fox Trotters but getting too old and tired to throw the small bales.

Or it might even be a 2N I didn't check the numbers on 2Ns so it could well be a 2N and since the 2N and 9N look the same it can be hard to figure out
