I was wondering if anyone knows of any problem with the ford 8n engine catching fire. My father-in-law was on his 8n when it started to chug. He though the gas was running low. Took off gas cap and fuel burped out of tank onto him and tractor. Fuel ignited, I need not say more. I was wondering if anyone knows of the 8n having this problem. Just trying to make sence of what happened.

Thanks,

About twenty years ago the local Ford dealer had a poster on the parts counter about free replacement gas caps. I have had one on mine since then.

Common problem on any gas tank on any tractor is the gas cap vent clogging and when that happens it can do just what you talk about. But as any machine you need to be careful with haveing a hot engine and tring to open up the gas tan and or to fill up the tank.

Manufacturers have been giving free replacement gas caps for several years because of this. Did he ever respond to the recall?

it is IH giving out replacement gas caps(as you will see by link below) not Ford. Haven't heard of Ford tractors manufactures giving out free or replacement gas caps.I could be wrong,BUT...HTH

Approximatly 20 year ago Ford Did have a program for that, Dad got several. The new caps I did not think were as good as the orignal.

Have you ever experienced this or know of anyone having the problem with the gas cap? When was the recall? Was this for the ford 8n?

Thanks

I got a free replacement cap about 15 years ago for my ford 600.The new cap is vented and has a ball float in the cap to prevent leaking if a tractor is turned over. The 8n has a vent in the tank that plugs up with dirt or mud daubers clay.In any case I was taught early on to never open the tank or refuel a hot tractor.
