The cold snap that hit Florida last week drove the rats from some newly cleared fields into my in-laws house and attic;probably dozens. The field mice are getting controlled by bait and sticky traps, but the rats continue to move in.They can't afford to tent;what are some other options?

You will want to watch the advice about baits. Unfortunately the vermin (mice in our case) tend to die inside of walls and other hard to get at places. The stench from a small mouse rotting behind the drywall is sickening. A dozen rats???
I like the sticky trap I saw on a TV show a while back. Bait was placed near what must have been a strong flypaper so they did not run off and die in the ducts.

The old rat man's trick was to mix rat bait with sardine oil. Rats love it. He made a very good living.

I found a great solution. I took 2" PVC. I started with a Tee and added 15" long pieces straight across from each other. One short piece to a cap (unglued). Put the poison / peanut butter mix down the short leg and place at the exterior of the foundation. Stake it down to prevent animals carrying it off. Killed my rat problem on the second night. I freshened the bait six weeks later and had no new signs of activity.

Good luck,

Bill
